“Yep,” I snap.

“Well, we can get a test done asap, then. What are they wanting? You don’t have to pay anything after eighteen.”

Xan pipes up again. “They don’t want him, Tim. As far as we could tell, anyway, seeing as how the boy hit him.” Xan is starting to laugh at the absurdity of it all.

“You got into a brawl with your son?” Tim shouts.

“Well, not a brawl exactly. He hit me and I fell over into a box,” I look to the heavens trying to explain the most ridiculous scenario I’d ever been involved in.

“What the fuck were you doing to him for him to hit you?” he asks.

“Nothing to him…” I splutter.

Xan, clearly on a roll now, shouts, “He was snogging the face off the mother. The son did not appreciate the love-on show.”

“Fuck off, Xander, you’re not helping.” I give him a shove hoping to shut him up, but he carries on.

“Evie always was an enigma,” he says smiling.

“I think they’ll need protecting if it gets out. The lad’s in a band. He might get unwanted attention. As well as the mother,” Mick says to Tim, trying to bring some sense back to the conversation.

“Do you think it will come out tomorrow, Mick?” Tim asks him.

“Yeah, I do. There were too many people to keep it totally quiet. True or not, it was put out there, and you know how these things go. We tried to wipe photos from phones and stuff, but people will talk.”

“Ok, I’ll get on to PR, but we need to talk to the boy and his mother to see what they want to do. Have you got their details?”

“No,” I laugh out, honestly if this hadn't happened to me, I would not have believed it. “They all stormed off, refusing to talk to me. Don’t think this is going to be easy. They don’t want to see me, and they clearly never intended to tell me.”

Tim thinks a bit then says, “Well we can’t protect people who don’t want to be. Can you find them, Jase?”

“Yeah. Will get someone on it straight away. Won’t be hard with the boy being in a band.”

”It’s late there,” Tim grumbles, effectively ending the discussion. ”Let’s get together in the morning, your time, and see what we need to do going forward. Marcus, don’t do anything, don’t go anywhere, just go home. Don’t chase them. Let’s work through it and see what comes.”

We all nod our agreement, but before we hang up I say to Tim, “Just so you know, Tim, I don’t care that he’s eighteen. I don’t care if they don’t want protecting, I want them protected. I don’t want them hurt by me and all my bullshit just because I ended up in the wrong fucking pub.”

“Understood, Marcus,” he says.

“You going to be ok on your own, Kellen? Do you think you should call your family?” Xan asks worriedly, staring at me after my outburst.

“Not a fucking chance. I need to keep my family away from me and them.” Remembering Evie’s and James’s words, I add, “I’m not sure what’s gone on, but I need to find out first before I start anything in the family.”

I drop down onto the old green sofa in this scruffy room in the back of the Green Dragon. The wrong fucking pub. This room has probably seen it all, and now some. I relax my head back onto the sofa and look up at the ceiling. “What the hell just happened, Xan?” I ask him quietly.

“Potentially something fucking amazing.” He looks at me seriously. “Best of luck buddy, I think you’re gonna need it.”

“Yeah, totally amazing. Bring it on, baby.” I grin at him. “Fucking Greystone pack, still running around her. Unbelievable! Maybe I should have tried looking for them all these years. Figures she would still be with them, they always totally protected her.”

“You looked for her?” Xander raises his eyebrows at me.

I nod. “A few times. Lots, actually. Different cities, for years on and off, no trace. Nothing. So fucking weird. I even got Gile’s shitty P.I. friend to look. Nothing. Nada.” I say.

“Well, she must have changed her name to Greystone because the boy is James Greystone,” Xander says. “I thought at first, before I met him, he was one of theirs, but it seems she just changed her name to theirs. Figures, I guess.”

I bang my head against the back of the sofa. “Fucking fuck. Unreal.”

“She looks good though.” He turns and smirks at me. “Really good.”
