I smile as I get myself sorted for bed, not even looking at the display when the phone rings.
“What you want?” his voice rings out, the moment the call connects—it’s Bucky.
“To give you a kiss, Baby.”
“Sweet b Jaysus, Mum. Do you know how old I am?”
“Sure do, Son. Have you seen the pic I sent James?”
“Yeah,” his voice has gone down in volume and he sounds almost sad. “We were going to tell you. It’s not been great at the house, they’re all struggling. We’re okay ‘cos we get to see you part of the week. They haven’t, so…”
“Well, hopefully I can sort that out a bit. I don’t want to hurt anyone. I’ll sort it, Bucky.”
“I know, Momma G. Night. Love you.”
“Love to you both.”
He sings back to me, “Night, night, sleep tight, don’t let Marshall's whiskey bite.”
“Bit late for Jude. See you tomorrow. Let me know what time you’re both landing.”
“Will do.” He hangs up and I lay down to sleep, mulling everything over. I want to get sorted before I go to the country for a week or so. Jackson and Jonno tomorrow. If I know what time the boys are coming, I’ll get the uncles together here to see them. I close my eyes without any doubts at all, for the first time in weeks.
Early the next morning, I call Jonno and Jackson and invite them over for breakfast.
“Are you wherever Jude is?” Jonno asks.
“You know I am, Jonno. See you asap. Bacon’s not going well, so I need Jackson on my grill.”
“On our way, baby sis!” Jonno exclaims.
I get set up in the courtyard and let Jude know they’re on their way over. He looks a bit hungover, but a lot better.
