“I’m so nervous I could throw up. Yes! Let’s do it!”

I kissed the back of her hand and led us up the porch, where I vowed to give her the best party experience of her life.

Audrey

Music blasted around me, the loud bass and fast-paced tunes filling every part of the large house. There was so much to look at, at any point, and my senses were in overdrive. There were couples making out on the couch, a bunch of drinking games going on in various rooms, and lots of laughter.

My idea of a party came from movies or TV shows, where people would do keg stands and chants. This was more chill. Some parts were crazy, but I found myself relaxing after scanning around the room and not seeing Quentin or his friends. Other guys on the team were there, most of them super kind.

Theo introduced me as his girl to five of them. I was just Audrey. His girlfriend. And it was so easy.

I smiled into my cup as someone approached me.

“Why are you smiling like that?” A dark-haired, young guy grinned at me. “Seems unfair that you’re not sharing good news.”

The first drink loosened me up, so my usual nerves and social awkwardness went away. This guy was on the team, I was sure. Maybe a sophomore? “This is my first party, and it’s better than I thought.”

“Oh, first hockey house party? This is pretty tame.” He downed his cup and jutted his chin toward mine. “Need another?”

I stared at the empty vodka soda. I rarely drank, but it felt fitting to do it at my first party. Plus, Theo was here. It was about damn time I did things that weren’t following every rule. I didn’t have clinicals tomorrow, so screw it. “Sure.”

“Come on then, girl.” The guy took my hand and led us from the spot in the hallway toward the kitchen where all the drinks were kept. His hand was smaller than Theo’s, and it felt weird holding it. The kitchen smelled clean. I expected trash or beer, but no, lemon something.

“You sniffing the air?”

“It smells good in here.” I chuckled. “So yeah. I am.”

“You’re fucking cute.” The guy nudged his elbow into my side. “I love it.”

“Oh.” I blushed, hard. No one but Theo had ever complimented me in my life, and my skin felt too tight. “I’m uh, with someone.”

“I’m sure you are, look at you.” The guy winked. “What were you drinking?”

“Vodka sprite.”

“Sit. Come on.” He hit the counter before he poured a shot into my cup. “Need me to lift you?”

“Audrey.”

Theo stood at the entrance to the kitchen, his eyes zeroing on the guy next to me. A muscle in his jaw flexed as he took two large strides toward me. Without a warning, he cupped my face and kissed me hard.

Holy shit.

This wasn’t a kind kiss. He nipped my lips, sucking my bottom one before moving his knee between my legs. Heat exploded all over me.

“Christ, Sanders. Take it fucking down. Point made.”

Theo cupped my throat, his large hand almost covering the entirety of it, where his thumb rested on my pulse point. His eyes darkened, and he licked the side of his lip with a slight smile.

“I see you’ve met my girlfriend.”

“Yeah, fucker. I got it. Damn.” The guy shoved Theo’s side with a laugh. “Audrey is a hot name.”

“No.” Theo glanced at the dude. “Move on, Hannigan.”

“Audrey, right? You’re stunning. When this old fuck leaves next year, let me know.” He winked. “Your drink is ready.”
