“No. They do, too. They are probably just avoiding the rabid chihuahua he’s taking care of.”

“He got it from Rothbart’s.”

“He did.”

“Was he home?”

“No. But I’ll be going back for him.”

“I’d rather you didn’t. My tracker is gone. He won’t find us here.”

Remi had nice lips, even with the scar, and they stayed closed the whole time. My eyes stayed glued to them, waiting for him to talk. But he didn’t voice any reasons why he looked like he thought there was a chance that Rothbart would find us here.

And I couldn’t bring myself to ask. Instead, I asked about the injury in his underwear region that I was close to sitting on, “Are you okay now? I am sorry.”

“It’s fine. We’ll call it karma.”

“What do you mean?” I scooted away when I realized his injured cock was actually hard between my legs.

“I mean, I deserved it.”

“For what? For something you’re about to do?”

“For what I’ve already done.”

“So…for saving me? That makes sense.”

“Why would it make sense? We were always so confusing to one another.” A half smile formed, his nose wiggling against mine.

“Oh, really? It shouldn’t surprise me that you’re out here then?”

“You’ll get used to me.” One eye closed, long lashes fanning his cheekbone. “I need a coffee. Do you want one?”

“Won’t that keep you awake?” I couldn’t say how I knew that would happen. I just did.

“I don’t plan on going back to sleep.”

“It’s not even light yet.” Blackness met the window, and the open drapes welcomed it inside.

“It will be soon. It’s early morning. My favorite time of day.”

“Why?”

“I like the sunset, too. I like the colors. Pink is my favorite, and the sky has the best hues in the early morning or late afternoon.”

“I think I’m too tired to see it.”

“There’ll be other sunrises for us to enjoy.” He gripped me tighter, his hand on my back, no longer moving now that my heart rate had slowed to a normal pace, and he walked us to the kitchen, where he set me on the island.

“I’m not clean.” I pulled his sweater underneath my bum. “Well, I took off my underwear, and you know, we don’t know what germs I have.”

“You’re fine.”

He froze for a moment, his tongue smearing across his lower lips as he silently scanned me.

“Are you afraid to shower?”

“Why would you ask that?”
