Chapter 24

~~ James ~~

It’s been a long day trying to concentrate on work. I realize I’ve read the same vendor quote for refinishing our hull at least three times without actually seeing it and I decide I need to take a break.

Lorelai is here.

In Bearberry Bay.

I wanted to touch her every single second I was at the school this morning. In our week at the cabin, she’d been adorable at times, heartbreakingly sad other times, and hot as effing hell almost all the time. Today, though, today she was every inch a powerful woman.

Her long copper hair was pulled up in some sort of twist, with a few wisps flying free. The dark chocolate pantsuit she wore accentuated all her curves. Following her outside had left my cock hard as a rock and my fingers begging to cup her ass and pull her into me. She was also wearing a slight bit of makeup that made her silver eyes even larger and her lips a shimmery peach.

I’d wanted to devour her, but at the same time, this version of Lorelai terrified me. This Lorelai was not a victim, not a wounded girl. This version is not just an equal. This woman could break me, would break me if I had to watch her live here, watch her date, watch her fall in love with someone else. I can’t deal with that.

A knock on my office doorframe startled me. Kaiden waited for my acknowledgment, and then strode across the room. He dropped a file folder onto my desk with a dramatic flourish.

“I know you said not to look up your girl, but there’s something you need to know,” he said in greeting.

“She’s here,” I tell him.

“You know?”

“You know?”

“Cami told me she’s staying at The Bliss B & B. She saw the file out on my desk and there was a photo attached. Little sneak flipped through it. That was a couple of weeks ago, and she just mentioned it. If I didn’t think she’d like it, I would spank her sassy little ass.”

I laugh at that, but sober quickly when I tell Kaiden, “She’s a teacher at Emilie’s school. We had a conference this morning. I almost fell on my ass.”

“I can imagine. Did you guys talk?”

“No, the rooms are monitored. She pretended she didn’t know me.”

“What? Really?” Kaiden exclaims.

“Well, it was obvious she recognized me. She introduced herself for the cameras."

A notification lights up my phone, and I check it. It’s an email from the school. From Lorelai. “Speak of the devil,” I say, waving the phone.

I click on the email. “It’s just a recap of our meeting.”

Kaiden is reading over my shoulder. “Her cell number is there,” he points out. “In the signature.”

“I see it.” I copy it and save it in my contacts.

“You going to call her?”

“I don’t know.”

“Whether you do or don’t, you might want to check out that file.”

“That’s an invasion of privacy, Kaiden.”

“Most of that information is public.”

I don’t like his argument. “Most. Which means some is not.”

He waves it off. “You coming to dinner next week?” Kaiden asks. “I think we’re going to Antonelli’s.”
