“Where are you going?” I ask him, attempting to keep my voice steady, although my body is betraying me with my heart pounding inside my chest. We didn’t really talk about our plans for the night, but I’m confused as to why he’s ready to leave already.
“I have a flight to catch. I’m going to go spend the weekend with my sister.”
Suddenly, I feel extremely exposed under his gaze. There’s nothing menacing about the way he looks at me, but his expression is unreadable as he scans my body before landing on my eyes again. “I’m a little confused.” I cross my arms over my chest and nod down to his erection in his pants. “What about you?”
“Don’t hide yourself from me.” Leo reaches for my arms, pulling them away from my chest as he takes a step toward me. “And I’ll survive. Consider this a favor from me.” He pauses, his lips meeting mine before he pulls away again. I’m left breathless, staring after him as he walks the short distance to the front door and begins to turn the handle.
As he pulls the door open, he pauses at the threshold and glances back at me one last time.
“And now you owe me.”

LEO
Istare out at the glistening surface, feeling the contempt sliding through my veins like ice. She is perfect—flawless, really—with the way she skates effortlessly around the rink. I can’t help but stare, even as I want to tear my own eyes away from her. She pays no attention to anyone because she doesn’t care what they think of her. I welcome her cold shoulder. It’s exactly how I want things between us to be.
Aria Reed only cares about herself and winning.
She moved back to Idyll Cove a few years ago, but I’ve known her for longer than that. We had spent a majority of our lives competing against one another. And if I am being honest, she is a phenomenal figure skater. I appreciate that because I don’t want the competition to be easy. I want to win because I earned my spot by competing against the best skaters.
Aria Reed is one of the best.
And she is the furthest thing from easy.
After giving her one last piece of my attention, I tear my gaze away from her and walk over to the door. As I step out onto the ice, the moment my blades hit the surface, everything around me fades away. The background noise stops. Any negative energy simply dissipates. It is just me and the ice and nothing else. I pop my AirPods into my ears and turn up the music as I begin to skate around the rink.
I don’t know what I’m going to do since I don’t have my figure skating partner Delaney to skate with anymore. A few months ago, she found out that she was pregnant with her long-time boyfriend. We were originally planning on her skating until she wasn’t able to anymore. That was still supposed to be a few months from now. I was supposed to have more time to plan on what I was going to do when she was out.
And then she experienced some complications. Her doctor advised her to stop skating immediately. Delaney wasn’t due for another five months and she was planning on taking at least two months after she gave birth off too.
I’m not mad—I want nothing but the best for her. I want her baby to be healthy. I want her and Tim to be able to celebrate this time in their life. I also want to have a partner I can skate with. I wanted to have a little more time to find someone else I could compete with.
To put it mildly—I am fucked.
Delaney’s abrupt departure from the competitive skating world threw a bit of a wrench in my plans. Since we’re already well into the season, I need to find a new partner, but it’s not easy. Partners typically find each other early on in their skating careers. When you find someone that you mesh with, you basically skate with them for the rest of eternity.
Or until situations like this happen.
Delaney and I had been skating together since we were about twelve years old. We went through middle school, high school, and then joined a team that competed worldwide, representing our country. Sixteen years of learning how to move and work together and now I am back at square one. It’s a much bigger challenge to find a partner as an adult than it was to find one as a kid.
Aria skates past me, her feet moving swiftly across the ice. The smell of lavender lingers in the air and the scent invades my senses. I can’t help myself as my eyelids flutter shut and I take a deep breath, drawing the lingering hints of her perfume into my lungs.
“Let me show you how bad I can be.”
“I won’t stop you.”
