Grabbing Boris’s leg, I pull him from underneath the sink where he landed. He slowly comes awake. Placing my knee on his chest, I pull the wire out of my pocket and wrap it around his neck. He grabs the metal, but I wrap it around my hands and yank in opposite directions.

His face immediately reddens. He claws at my hands, but it’s no use. I tug the ends of the wire further apart cutting into his flesh. Boris stops fighting and goes limp.

As quickly as it started it was over. Their arrogance got the best of them. The fight was over the moment they thought they got the jump on me. If they knew anything about the Church, they should have known I’d be prepared.

After cleaning up the scene as best as I could, I take Boris’ knife since it had my blood on it. Grabbing my gun near the trashcan I stuff it back in the back of my jeans. I then place both men in the “out of order” stall before heading out of the bathroom.

I quickly make my way back up the hall and toward the dance floor. Passing only one person on my way out. I keep my head down to block my appearance from those around me. I don’t have to worry about the cameras, they’ve been on a loop since I walked in.

When I get back to the table, Summer is smiling at me.

“We need to leave,” I say as soon as I reach her.

Her smile falls. “But I just ordered wings.”

I grab her arm and gently pull her out of the seat. “Now, Summer.”

She stops and looks at my face, taking in everything.

“Okay.”

I pull her with me back toward the exit. A loud commotion erupts behind us. We don’t stop to see what it is. We walk out of the building and straight toward the parking garage. Once we climb in the car I quickly pull away putting as much distance as possible between us and the club. We ride in silence.

The Stars

Summer

Staring out the window in the silent car, I watch the lights of the buildings fade by. I was in my feelings about this “date”. I felt proud of myself for achieving such a milestone in my recovery.

I’d been clean for years, but there is a different feeling of accomplishment when you can truly be faced with your old demons and still resist. I had no plans to make a habit of facing those demons, but I felt empowered being able to do it at least once.

Focusing on the passing scenery, I notice that we’ve been driving for a while and nothing looks familiar.

“Where are we going?”

“It’s a surprise.”

I turn to look at him. For someone that I didn’t know up until tonight could drive, Gabriel is a very safe driver. He’s not speeding or swerving in and out of lanes. He’s actually pretty calm behind the wheel.

“I like surprises,” I say, then amend. “Unless we’re going to another club. I think one is enough to last me for a while.”

He smiles, cutting his eyes to me briefly. “No more clubs.”

I felt confident in that. We drive for another twenty minutes before we pull into a nearly empty parking lot. A black SUV is the only car parked in the vacant lot. The windows are down and the speakers are blasting reggae music. The building is small oval shaped with a dome roof.

As soon as we pull in and park, the doors to the SUV open and four black men jump out. Gabriel gets out of the car and before I can open my door, he’s there to help me.

He shuts the door and takes my hand walking me over to the sidewalk. One of the four men steps forward. He’s tall, handsome, and dark-skinned with a low-fade and goatee. As soon as we approach him, he daps Gabriel up.

“Damn, Big Guy, I didn’t know you were into the sistas.” He grins showing off his full bottom set of grills. “Wassup, mama,” he nods, giving me attention.

“Hi. I’m Summer,” I say, holding out a hand.

“Pharrell, but I’m going to hold off on that handshake. He don’t seem like the type that wants me touching his girl.”

I look over to Gabriel waiting for him to deny what his friend says.
