Again, the specifics of my plan aren’t carved in stone—more like sand, washed away by a few rogue waves. The details will iron themselves out in the moment… I hope.

On the plus side, if I fail, the vampires will end me so quickly I won’t feel a thing. One moment, I’ll be swinging stakes and slinging spells, and the next, I’ll be with my family in whatever life comes after this one.

Before I can step over the threshold, pain sears through my body as Sebastian’s grip tightens, his cold eyes glinting with a dangerous glimmer under the eerie glow of the moon in the night sky.

Fintan turns around the moment I hiss in pain. “Sebastian,” he warns with a growl.

“You two give the place a once over,” Sebastian says without bothering to look at his second in command. “Make sure there are no wolves lying in wait.”

“I don’t hear anything.” Rune cocks his head to the side.

“You’re hurting me,” I whimper, futilely trying to pull away.

Sebastian’s head whips around when Fintan takes a step towards us. “Go,” he orders, fangs on full display.

Fintan bares his teeth but is gone in the next moment, his growl of frustration still hanging in the air as Rune joins him.

“You think loudly, Miss Josephine,” Sebastian says when it’s just the two of us.

The air crackles with tension as I meet his gaze, refusing to look away and submit to him. I know I’m toeing dangerously close to the precipice of the line, but I can’t help it.

“I don’t know what you’re talking about.”

He doesn’t buy it. Not for a second.

After hundreds of years of experience, I suppose it takes more than that to pull the wool over a vampire’s eyes. Does that mean my plan is over before it even begins?

Sebastian tilts his head, looking down at me. “Do you know why I didn’t snap that magic-blocking collar right back around your neck before you awoke in my dungeon?”

“Because I smashed the shit out of the damn thing.”

Sebastian’s hand twitches where he holds me. “You think I don’t have access to the same equipment as the wolves? I have that and so much worse, little witch.”

“Ooh,” I taunt, unaffected by his threat. “You sound very threatening. All growly and scary-like, your majesty.”

Oh, Gaia have mercy.

Maybe being kidnapped has finally gotten to me and I’ve cracked, gone completely mental, bonkers, loony.

I’m tired of being pushed around, but provoking a vampire whose favorite topic of conversation is how much he wants to kill me is probably not the most sane thing to do.

It helps to know Sebastian swore to Fintan he wouldn’t touch me. Whatever bond they have is keeping me relatively safe for now. Unfortunately, a vampire’s word only goes so far. And that protection has an expiration date.

Two weeks until the new moon.

I won’t be sticking around that long.

“I am giving you a single warning now. You have pushed your luck too far already today, Josephine.”

I roll my eyes. Could he be any more predictable? “Yeah, you’ve been a broken record since we met, dude. You want me dead, I get it.”

“You have no idea, witch. I have been holding myself back for Fintan’s sake. He thinks you are destined to be his, and that is sacred, but that protection only extends so far. Do not give me a reason to stop showing this amount of restraint.”

Yeah, Sebastian is the master of restraint. And I’m the poster child for the phrase calm, cool, and collected.

“And the difference between you and me, Josephine, is I do not hesitate to follow through on my threats.”

Fintan joins us with a rush of wind that blows my hair forward and into my face and mouth. “Not a soul in sight,” he reports, though I’m sure Sebastian already knew that.
