“Two.” His middle finger joins the first.

My throat constricts, making it difficult to find my voice.

“I told you already!”

The rubber soles of my shoes scrape against the side of the building as I try to get back over the edge.

“Three.” His grip slackens slightly, his expression a mixture of rage and frustration. A part of me wonders if I’ve pushed him too far—if I’ve signed my death warrant.

“Please,” I beg, taking the risk of looking into Sebastian’s eyes, searching for any glimmer of humanity that might sway him. All I find is a void of icy blue, as cold and unforgiving as the vacuum of space.

As I watch, tendrils of red swirl around the edges and seep into his irises. There is no mercy in those eyes, only a hunger for revenge and an unyielding thirst for control.

He’s not going to spare me.

“Sebastian.”

The voice startles both of us.

I’m surprised my heart hasn’t given out yet.

I look up through teary eyes to see the blurry image of Finn standing in the doorway, fresh blood still matting his hair, even though there is no trace of the actual wound.

He looks pissed… beyond pissed.

Great, he wants a stab at me before his leader sends me to my impending Humpty Dumpty recreation as I splat on the concrete.

“You had your chance with her,” Sebastian says, fangs flashing as his blood-red gaze refocuses on me.

Thankfully, he has readjusted his grip, and all five fingers are firmly around my arm once more. I would feel a lot better if I had the support of some nice, thick concrete beneath my feet, but at least I’m not Josie jam.

“Bring Josie back over the ledge and take yer hands off her.” Fintan’s eyes blaze with an intensity that matches his demand, the emerald green slowly being overtaken by the signature vampire-red.

“Are you the one in charge now?” Sebastian asks without relenting his hold on me. “You are still a fledgling compared to my years.”

“Don’t make me repeat myself.” Fintan steps toward us, and I realize that it’s not me he’s pissed at—it’s Sebastian.

Suddenly, I have the feeling I’m about to be smack in the middle of a vampire dominance showdown.

“Is this really how you want to play things, Fintan?”

I have an exciting third option that involves me, an airplane ticket, and about a liter of wine. Or maybe something stronger, like straight bourbon to wash away this entire experience. Somehow, I don’t think either of these vamps will go for my plan.

“I won’t let ye harm her.”

Okay, I am officially beyond confused.

Since when does he care what happens to me?

“She is mine to do with as I please,” Sebastian says.

Yeah, I don’t think so.

“No.” I track the angry snarl back to Fintan, watching as his stance shifts, ready to challenge his leader. “She is my Unity Witch and I’ll not let ye harm her.”

An ice-cold shard of terror shocks my system.

That’s not possible. Vampires are only supposed to claim Sun Witches on the night of the new moon.
