“Why did Egan take ye to yer old house?”

Again, she pauses before answering. I count the beats. Ten.

“The alpha took me so a Moon Witch could perform a spell on me.”

Smart. She told me only a partial truth while, technically, following the rules of our game. Kudos to her.

“A spell for what?” I ask, already knowing what her response is going to be.

“It’s my turn for a question. As long as we’re both still playing by the rules, that is.”

She’s smart, this one.

“Of course. What is yer next question?”

“Even if I answer all of your questions and give you all the information I know about Egan, you still won’t let me go. Will you?”

I pause, unsure how to answer without lying or losing what little progress we’ve made. “That’s not my decision to make, I’m afraid.”

“Yeah. That’s what I figured.”

“Not my decision… but that doesn’t mean I won’t vouch for ye when the time comes. Which is likely to be more effective if Sebastian knows ye’ve cooperated.”

“Gee, thanks.”

I’ve spent enough time with Rune in his broody, sarcastic moods to know that sentiment isn’t sincere. Oh well, I’ll gain the trust I’ve lost after she gives me the information I need.

“Exactly what was Egan after with the spell he had the Moon Witch cast?” Let her try to wiggle her way out of that one.

“I’m done playing this game.”

I frown at the brick wall and struggle not to turn around. “Just because ye didn’t like my answer to yer question doesn’t mean ye can back out.”

“Sure it does.”

My frown turns into a scowl. “I think ye underestimate how much my word means to Sebastian as his second in command. It could be the deciding factor for yer wellbeing.”

“Fine.”

I listen to the beating of her fluttering heart begin to slow before she answers. “The alpha wanted a moonstone amulet that my mother supposedly stole from him twenty-five years ago.”

“An amulet?”

Could this be related to the recent surge of Algiers pack sightings on this side of the river?

Rune and I have been tracking strange movements from Egan’s pack—coming and going from the French Quarter, gone as quickly as they were spotted, as if they were testing the boundary and our response times.

Were they looking for this moonstone amulet the whole time? Moving from quadrant to quadrant, eliminating sections of the city one at a time?

Did she find it for him? Does he have possession of the artifact? And what does he need it for?

The sound of scuffling feet draws my attention back to Josephine in her cell. “My turn,” she says, inching away from the wall ever so slightly.

I hope that means we’re making some kind of progress.

“Sebastian wants to kill me—that’s obvious—hell, I expected it. But there’s something different about you.”

“Have ye considered that ye can’t paint all of vampire-kind with the same brush?”
