No, not missing.

Hidden. In a place only I could find.

If Grand-Mère hid the grimoire here so no one else could get their hands on it, I can’t risk the wolves taking it from me.

Stepping back, I try to set the panel back in place before someone catches me and the secret hideaway is discovered, along with the spellbook.

Only it doesn’t close.

I trace the edge of the opening, trying to feel for the extra piece of paneling that slid away, but come up empty.

A cold tendril of panic slithers down my spine as my fingers fumble around a second time with the same result.

The floor creaks in the hallway, the top stair giving me a warning that someone is coming and I better figure something out quickly.

I grab the high back of the old leather armchair in the corner and drag it over to cover the hole in the wall, vowing to return to retrieve the book later. The chair mostly does the job of covering up the evidence.

As long as no one looks too closely.

I spin around and find Danica scrutinizing me. “What are you up to?”

“Nothing.” I hold my hands up innocently, as if that will convince her.

It doesn’t.

She steps into the room and looks around, brows fused together as she tries to suss out what I was doing. I scramble to think of how to draw her away without making it obvious that I’m trying to hide something.

With the werewolf ability to scent emotions, it’s like they can read your mind, meaning it’s likely too late to play innocent. Danica will uncover the grimoire.

I am so completely fucked.

I open my mouth, not sure what excuse will come out, when I lose my vision—everything goes unnaturally black.

Danica turns to me, the glint of her animalistic eyes the only thing I can make out through the strange blanket of magical darkness. “What did you do, witch?”

“Nothing.” I stretch my hands out in front of me, finding the desk to lean on while my eyes adjust.

It’s definitely Sun Witch energy permeating the air.

The magic is so strong its power zings through the interference of the collar around my neck. “Feels like the Cavalry is here. You can feel the magic, can’t you?”

I only hope the Sun Witches are here as my allies.

“You wolves are screwed.”

Danica rushes at me with an animalistic noise, pushing me back into the wall so hard my skull bounces off the drywall. The impact leaves me reeling… the claws of her wolf extend and pierce my skin where she holds my arms at my sides.

Panicked screams from downstairs end her assault.

“Vampires!”

What? Vampires? Here? Merde, we’re all screwed now.

“That’s impossible,” Danica says, her head whipping around to the door. “It’s daylight.”

I was looking for an opportunity to make a move and won’t get a better distraction than a vampire attack. Without thinking it through, I rush Danica, barreling into her and tackling her out of my father’s study.

Her shock only lasts a moment and then her claws tear into me, leaving lines of blood trickling down my arms.
