“Lying bitch!” Ginny shrieks at me, thick smears of mascara running down her face with her tears. “You mangled my sweet Johnny so badly we have to have a closed casket funeral.”

“It’s true,” a wolf who’s built like a refrigerator says from his station against the wall. “In one fell swoop, she took out poor John and beheaded one vamp. That part was cool as fuck.”

“What is wrong with you, moron?” the female wolf chastises. “His grieving widow is right here.”

“I don’t…” I trail off as the memory hits.

My spell. The falling balcony.

It was my fault.

The realization makes me sick. Was the guy a monstrous werewolf trying to kidnap me? Yes. Did he deserve to die? I’m not arrogant enough to think that I can make that decision.

Yet I did.

Although… I didn’t mean to kill him.

I didn’t even mean to kill the vampire. My spell got away from me and the balcony came crashing down. Magic is so readily available here, it’s overwhelming.

“When we finally got Johnny out from underneath all the cement and rebar, he looked like one of those fish with the eyes on top of their heads. The flat ones, y’know?”

“A flounder?” one of the pack onlookers offers.

“Yeah, if that’s the one that’s got the eyeballs bulging outta their heads.”

The visual makes my insides curdle. I’m about to ruin this rug with more than just blood.

Ginny sobs. “You should suffer for what you did to my Johnny. He was all I had. I’m alone now.”

“Hush now.” Egan pulls her to his chest, his paper-thin sincerity evaporating the moment he locks eyes with me over her shoulder. “We’ll take care of you. We’re family, after all.”

“Really?” She sniffles as she pulls away and peers up at him. Even in five-inch heels, she’s a good head and a half shorter than the alpha wolf. “You’d let me stay here with you?”

Egan runs his hands up and down Ginny’s bare arms and touches her in a way that makes me think there’s a catch to his offer. “Don’t worry about the details now,” he says, spinning her around. “Because you’re absolutely right. This witch deserves to pay for what she did, and you deserve to avenge your fallen mate.”

By the animalistic glint in her eye, I would almost swear she was a werewolf. “I do.”

“You’ve got five minutes with her to work through that aggression.” He chuckles. “How’s that for grief therapy?”

“I need at least a half hour to even make a dent in the amount of hate I have for this witch.”

Egan arches a brow. “Don’t push your luck.”

“Sorry, Alpha.” Ginny bows her head in submission.

Egan checks his watch and then pats Ginny on the cheek. “We are on a strict schedule. Trust me, five minutes is plenty of time to leave a lasting impression. I’ll even let Danica give you a hand.”

“Gladly,” the female wolf says, coming around the table. She takes a fistful of my hair and I hiss when she yanks my head back. A bit of hair pulling can be hot given the right circumstances, but this is a little much.

Danica hauls me around so roughly I think she might fracture a bone. I’m yanked to my feet with a yelp, trying and failing to hide my fear.

Bucking and pulling against the immobile force of the female werewolf, there’s nothing I can do to protect myself.

“Nothing excessive, though,” Egan warns before departing. “I’m not done with the witch yet. We have a big day planned.”

A few of the other werewolves follow their alpha from the dining room, but a handful of them stick around to watch the impending girl-on-girl throw down: witch vs. human.

“Let her go,” Ginny instructs, and for a moment I think maybe she realized beating the crap out of me won’t solve anything.
