The mention of Mom catches me off guard.

“You knew my mother?”

“Celine and I had the unfortunate chance of meeting, yes. She stole something from me. And I want it back.”

“Well, I don’t have it so you can drop me back where you found me and maybe in, say, ten years, we’ll look back on this whole thing and have a laugh.”

Egan crosses his arms over his chest. The bulging display of muscle reminds me of how weak I am—of how easily he could overpower me. “You may not have it on you, but you’ll find it for me.”

“How will I do that when I don’t even know what it is? I haven’t set foot in New Orleans in over two decades—and was four years old when I left.”

“That doesn’t mean you don’t know where Celine stashed the moonstone amulet.”

An amulet? “You kidnapped me over an amulet? Have your Moon Witches make you another and let me go.”

Hell, if it means I get to leave, I’ll make him a new amulet. I’ll make him a dozen.

“We aren’t talking about any old trinket on a chain. This amulet is special.”

Special? He’s talking about this thing like a kid talks about their favorite stuffed animal. “If anyone has your amulet, it’s probably the vampires that killed my mom. Try asking them.”

The alpha’s eyes narrow at me, and then he laughs. It’s a loud, jarring sound that makes me jump.

It also pisses me off.

“I was a child when they were killed,” I shout over his laughter. “I barely remember anything about living here.”

“Regardless, you will help me find it.”

I want to laugh in his face, because the last thing I’ll do is help an arse like him, but if finding his amulet gets me my freedom, let’s get out there and find it.

With a sharp snap of his fingers, Egan makes an unspoken demand and the wolf watching us opens the door and passes a bundle of fabric through the opening.

Egan tosses the blanket at my feet before joining his goons outside my cell. “Get some sleep. We leave at first light.”

The lock clicks in place and the view slot slides shut, encasing me in near total darkness once more. The footsteps retreat down the hall, the echo growing fainter until I’m left alone once more.

Where will Egan and his pack take me? And what will they do to me when I can’t produce the amulet for him?

With my magic locked down, I don’t even have Mother Gaia with me to keep me safe or comfort me.

I unfold the blanket and sink to the ground, feeling defeated. I’m more alone than I’ve ever been and technically, the werewolves could keep me here forever and no one would ever know I was missing.

Cold, hard stone chills my ass through the thin blanket as I try—and fail—to find a more comfortable position. It’s going to be a long night.

All I wanted to do was lay my grandmother to rest.

How did I end up here?

More importantly, what is so special about Egan’s moonstone amulet? And why would Mom steal it from him?

It’s a shock to think that my mother would steal from werewolves. Or maybe Egan is lying. I wish I knew her well enough to know if what he’s claiming could be true.

But realistically, how well can you know someone you barely remember?

And another thing that bothers me… someone told the Alpha of the werewolf pack that I’m here. Why? And who? There aren’t many people who know I’m back in town.

I list the possibilities in my head: Callius, the too-charming warlock lawyer. Adelaide and her apprentice. The three other Sun Witches that attended my grandmother’s ritual. Bernard, the cab driver. Lisette, the woman who helped me at the airport… no, probably not her.
