She cringes and opens her mouth to apologize, but I just smile and wave away her concern. “I’m an empath, luv. I sense yer emotions. Yer fear and apprehension at the thought of me drinking from ye, for instance.”

She studies my gaze, and I hold nothing back from her. I let her see all the emotions I have for her: affection, respect, admiration, and concern.

“You seem much more human than Rune or Sebastian.”

I dip my chin. “Aye, that’s also part of being an empath. I like to think it’s helped me retain more of my humanity than my brothers. Plus, they’re both a lot older than me. Time wears on vampires.”

“How old are you, anyway?” Josie asks.

I press my smile against Josie’s neck, laying a simple peck there, easing her into the feeding. Her pulse quickens with anticipation that I feel in my chest. I have been waiting for this moment for what feels like an eternity. Now that it has finally come, I want to savor every second.

Not just that, I want it to be pleasurable for Josie as well.

Her fingers tangle in my hair, tugging me closer. As our bodies press together, it seems like the whole universe narrows down to just the two of us. I brush my mouth over her racing pulse, kissing and dragging my tongue over the pulsing vein.

She groans, tilting her head back to give me better access.

We’re locked in the here and now… her tension dissolving beneath my tongue.

“Yes, Finn,” she whispers, pressing her breast into my palm and groaning as I give an appreciative squeeze. “Please, Finn.”

My fangs pierce her flesh, and my mouth is filled with the most decadent rush of blood I’ve ever tasted. I groan against Josie’s skin as I swallow, her life essence coursing through my veins, her magic singing in my cells.

With every drop of her blood that glides over my tongue, my hunger grows more intense. Not just for her blood, but for her. I want to taste every bit of her. I want to bring her to the edge of ecstasy and beyond.

Josie’s body arches beneath me, her desire heightening my own. It would be so easy to lay her out on the pool deck and claim her body… but I won’t.

She’s honored me with a feeding, and I need her to understand that I will never take advantage. It’s hard—so very hard—to ease back, but I force myself to stop before things get out of hand.

My tongue flicks out for one last taste before I press a kiss to the two little fang marks I left behind. “I am honored, lass, for your gift, yer trust, and yer affections.”

She whines in disappointment when I straighten and end the contact of our feeding, but cuts the noise off quickly, her face flushing a beautiful pink. “Wow, sorry about that.”

“Och, don’t be. Ye don’t have to be embarrassed,” I assure her, though it is incredibly cute how flustered she gets. “Whatever the two of us share is amazing. No regrets.”

She draws a deep breath and exhales. “It’s incredible how much you affect me.”

Even now—monitoring her reactions to assess how she feels about that fact. “It’s not something I can control.”

Josie chuckles. “I appreciate it, still… you have an unfair advantage, sensing my emotions. It’s cheating. It’s like a half-step away from reading my thoughts.”

“I’m sorry. It’s unintentional. I promise I try to give ye as much privacy as I can.”

She flashes me a devilish smile. “I think the only way to even things out is for you to tell me what you’re feeling.”

“Right now?”

“Yes.”

I consider that for a moment. “Other people’s emotions are simple. Mine are… harder to decipher.”

“Will you try? Please?”

I drag the pad of my forefinger over her wrist gently, tracing the lines of her vein. “I’m scared.”

“Scared of what?” Josie asks, her voice quiet like she’s afraid of startling me.

I can’t tell Josie the truth—that I’m scared of her. Of what she could do to me… of losing her… of the power she has to break me. I’ve seen the hell Sebastian has been living…
