The light fades gently, and I meet the gazes of my vampire counterparts. Three? I don’t understand.

I read their expressions and though it makes no logical sense that in a few weeks our dispositions have changed so drastically—that’s what has happened.

They look at me—astonishment, wonder, and an undeniable connection that transcends words connecting us as one unit. It is a profound realization that our destinies are now inextricably linked, now and forever.

Something locks in place within me. As much as I didn’t want this, overcome by the warm embrace of the unity bonds, I realize how alone I’ve felt—for so long.

How adrift I’ve felt—with no sense of purpose.

How weak I’ve felt—unable to control my anxiety.

But these past weeks have given me a newfound strength. In this moment, under the watchful gaze of the moon, I embrace our intertwined fates, ready to face whatever awaits us with unwavering resolve.

With the ritual complete, the spell fades and I descend back to the ground. The serenity filling me… shatters the moment my feet touch the ground and reality hits.

From this night forward—whether or not we like it—our lives are forever entwined. Me, Fintan, Rune, and—

Sebastian pulls out of the circle and is gone before any of us have a chance to say anything. The three of us remain, our circle broken… none of us sure what to do now.

Rune is the first to break the heavy silence. “Did what I think just happened actually just happen?”

That’s a good question.

A better one is: did I just make the biggest mistake of my life?

CHAPTER TWENTY

FINN

With her hand in mine, I lead Josie toward my surprise, happier than I’ve been in either of my two lives. “Josie, relax. This is going to be fun, I promise.”

“I’d be more relaxed if you told me where you’re taking me,” Josie says.

“Then it wouldn’t be a surprise, would it?”

She frowns, but doesn’t protest as I lead her along.

That she trusts me enough to follow because I asked is a step in the right direction. If we’re going to be unity bound, we’ll need to trust one another to navigate what comes at us—except I don’t know whether we’re actually bound.

Yes, the unity ribbon joined Josie and me together, but it also emerged for Sebastian and Rune. What does that mean?

As far as I know, there has never been a binding between more than a single vampire and witch—until now.

It has to mean something.

When Sebastian raced off, Rune went off to find him and they returned home, leaving just Josie and me to sort out the aftermath of whatever happened to us in the clearing.

Now, a week later, we still haven’t seen much of our trusted leader—not that I’m complaining. It’s given me more time to spend with Josie, exploring what it means to be unity partners.

“You brought me to a pool?”

I frown. “Hey, ye peeked.”

“Did not. The chlorine stinging my nose is a giveaway.”

“Okay, open yer eyes.”

She looks around, obviously underwhelmed by my surprise. “Why the pool?”
