“Long story short, I quit.”

More silence, but I expected an explosion lay on the horizon.

“As in, no more escorting for me,” I tacked on, in case Sean didn’t catch my meaning.

“Goddamnit!”

I bit the inside of my lip to stop myself from laughing again.

“What the fuck is up with this love shit taking all of my best employees?” Sean’s voice raised, and he tacked on a few more curses for good measure.

“You found the man of your dreams, the one who fits you like a worn, leather glove,” I reminded him while turning away from the mirror to start the shower. “Would you deny the same for your friends?”

He huffed. “No, of course not, but this really sucks ass and not in the good way! Where the hell am I going to find another Drake Hemmings to put on the menu? Fuck! Who is it? And how the fuck do you fall so fast and easily when you’ve been anti-relationships your entire life? Whoever he is must have one hell of an ass because the boo I know would never give up his freedom at the risk of abandonment.”

My smile faded. Preston was the biggest gamble, but for once, the possibilities outweighed any negative fallout.

“Talk to me, Drake,” Sean demanded. “I can hear your brain whirring over the line.”

“Jacqueline sold her empire and gifted me two mil.”

“Chump change.” Sean snorted the words, well aware of my dad’s wife and her old money. But I’d never shared much about the boy-become-man I’d loved since high school.

“My stepbrother then gave me his ass,” I stated bluntly, leaving Sean speechless.

His silence lasted a handful of seconds that seemed an eternity.

“Um…want to repeat that?” he requested, his words slowly articulated.

“Are you judging me?” I shot back, feeling more unsettled than I’d expected.

Sean should be the last person to think I did something wrong. He was one of the most accepting people I’d ever met.

“Of course not,” he scoffed. “Just…goddamn. Since when did you have a thing for him?”

“Always.”

“The fuck, Drake! You’ve barely mentioned the guy in the few times you spoke about those years living in New York.”

I hadn’t and for good reason. Until that weekend, I’d squashed my longing, my desires for the forbidden deep inside. Not out of shame but for the preciousness of those fragile emotions that I’d always felt could never see the light of day.

“There was never any point in telling you about him,” I didn’t bother explaining all my reasons since they no longer mattered, “but we got stuck in the elevator, and shit finally rose to the surface.”

“Stuck? Jesus! What the hell happened?”

I gave Sean a quick rundown of Friday night’s events. From the nerves over seeing my stepbrother again to the moment the elevator’s doors slid open four hours later to release chaos on our asses.

Since then, it had been nothing short of euphoria experiencing everything I’d ever dreamed about.

“He told me he wants me forever, and I finally admitted after all this time that I love him.”

“Jesus fucking Christ,” Sean muttered. “Hold on…”

I could hear him murmuring indistinguishable words while he fumbled with his cell.

“Sorry. I’m back.”

“How’s Matteo?” I asked about his lover since he’d obviously been talking to him. They never went far on Sundays and were probably still in bed.
