“I never lied to you about my intentions, Rose. I’ve never hidden the fact that this was all I wanted in a partner. I asked you before we had sex if you wanted more, if you wanted Prince Charming and you said no,” Nathan pointed out. “I gave you every opportunity to back out and change your mind.”

I sighed. “I don’t know why we’re fighting about this. We both got what we wanted. I never even asked you to fall in love with me, all I wanted to know was if you still found me attractive after you got what you wanted.”

“This isn’t about you being a virgin, Rose, it never was. That’s not what I wanted from you and I am not one of those types of men. I wasn’t lying when I told you I thought you were beautiful from the minute I first saw you. But I don’t want anything from you other than sex and some company. As soon as we get home you can go back to your old life. The deal is finished. I’m hoping we can continue as you being my mistress however. Maybe we can even be friends one day.”

I sighed again, tired of arguing. “I’m hungry. Let’s go and find a restaurant and get something to eat.”

We walked out of our suite and rode the lift down to the lobby. Nathan suggested we try the restaurant in the hotel. I agreed, suddenly feeling the jetlag catching up with me. Or maybe it was the uneasy feeling that kept coursing through me every time I looked at him.

Nathan and I made our way to the restaurant and a waiter took us to a table by a set of huge open windows. The whole restaurant was right on the sand of Waikiki beach, just metres from the water. It was just getting on dusk, but the air was still balmy and people were still out swimming in the beautiful calm water. The air was heavily scented with the smell of frangipani and orchid blooms and the atmosphere around us was easy and relaxed. I sat back in my chair and let the beauty of the island unwind my whole body.

A Hawaiian woman walked over to us and draped a Lai over each of our heads. I thanked her and deeply breathed in the heady tropical scent. I felt my tension begin to melt away.

“This place is so beautiful,” I breathed out, breaking the tension that was thick between Nathan and I.

Nathan nodded, smiling slightly at me. “It is. I’ve booked us a tour of the island tomorrow. I thought it would be good to have a look around as soon as we got here in case we saw something we wanted to do later.”

“Yeah? That sounds great,” I replied lightly. I was starting to feel guilty about our argument. Nathan had never promised me a relationship, he never offered me anything more than sex, in fact, what he had offered me was the complete opposite of love. I was supposed to be his mistress right from the very beginning, even though our deal was now finished. So why did I suddenly want more? I wondered if I wanted a relationship in general or was I really falling for Nathan? I had intended for our sex to be light and carefree, but it was harder than I thought it would be.

“Are you ready to order, madam?” The waiter asked, snapping me back to reality.

Nathan and I both ordered then sat and watched the happy people playing and frolicking on the beach. It was relaxing and I didn’t want anything to ruin it. I tried to clear everything from my mind but Nathan brought up our argument.

“Rose, I want to explain,” Nathan offered after the waiter had brought out our meals.

I shrugged. “You have nothing to explain, Nathan. I overreacted. I know you never promised me anything more. I’m here to be your mistress and I know that’s all you want from me, all you ever wanted from me. Deal or no deal.”

“So now you’re okay with what happened?”

“Yes.” I replied lightly, like it was no big deal to me. “I was always okay with it,” I lied.

Nathan looked at me for a moment, trying to study my face, but I made sure it showed no emotion. He sighed and started to eat his meal. I didn’t have the energy to press the matter further right now, I was too busy trying to control all the feelings being around Nathan was starting to stir inside of me.

After dinner we walked back up to our room. Nathan told me that he was going to go downstairs to the hotel bar to have a drink. I was tired and decided to stay in the room and go to bed. Nathan said goodnight, kissed me lightly on the cheek and walked out of the room.
