I climaxed immediately, my body thrashing in the tub and water spilling out onto the floor as I cried Mr. Steele’s name. I slumped back in the tub, the phone clutched tightly to my ear, listening to Mr. Steele’s harsh pants and groans.

“Fuuuuck,” he moaned, “I just came all over the fucking floor.”

I laughed. “You’re not in bed?”

“No,” he said. “On the couch.”

Silence lapsed between us, and I started to feel a little self-conscious. I had just had phone sex with a client. If the sisters found out, they’d fire me for sure. “Mr. Steele, I -”

“Why can’t you do Wednesday night this week?” he asked abruptly.

“Oh, um, I have a dentist appointment,” I said. “I know you prefer Wednesdays, but my appointment has been booked for months and changing it is a pain. I’m sorry.”

“You don’t need to apologize. Thursday works just as well.” Mr. Steele hesitated. “I’m sorry for prying into your personal life.”

“It’s fine,” I said.

More silence before he said, “I should go. I need to clean the floor.”

I laughed. “Right. Thank you for checking about Thursday night, Mr. Steele. I appreciate it.”

“Text me if your car breaks down again,” he said. “Promise me.”

“I promise,” I said.

“That’s my good girl. Good night, Charlotte.”

“Good night.” I ended the call and sank into the water, feeling warm, happy, and like I mattered. Today hadn’t been a terrible day at work, and talking to Ella had cheered me up, but talking to Mr. Steele, being his good girl, and knowing that he wanted me was one hell of an addictive drug. Being his good girl made everything that was shitty and stressful in my life seem far less important.

You’re giving it to him for free, Riley. He’s taking advantage of you.

I pulled the plug before climbing out of the tub and towelling dry. No, he wasn’t. I was the one who’d told him I was in the tub, and if I was honest with myself, I’d done it on purpose. I wanted to turn him on, wanted him to think about me wet and naked. If anyone was to blame for what happened tonight, it was me.

I wanted what happened tonight to happen, and I didn’t care that I wasn’t making money off of it. It’s not like he would have booked me for tonight anyway.

You keep giving it away to him, and he won’t have to book you anymore. Then you’ll have no choice but to play with someone else. Is that what you want?

No, it wasn’t, but one night of phone sex wouldn’t make Mr. Steele stop booking me. Besides, I would keep it strictly professional from this moment on. How hard could that be?

CHAPTER 14

Riley

“Whenever I think your incompetence can no longer surprise me, it hits a new high, Ms. Gates. Or is it a new low?” Mr. Rainer stood beside my desk, contempt on his face and in his voice.

I cringed, standing up quickly behind my desk. “What did I do wrong?”

“Even the fact that you have to ask is pathetic,” Mr. Rainer said. “I asked you to reschedule my meeting with Aiden for this afternoon to Monday, yet I see it on my calendar for Tuesday.”

“You asked for Tuesday,” I said. “I remember quite clearly because you already had a meeting on Tuesday, and you asked me to move that one to Wednesday so that -”

“Are you calling me a liar?” Mr. Rainer’s usually pale face was now the colour of his thinning red hair.

“No, sir,” I said. “But if you’ll recall, we talked at length about your Tuesday meeting and whether rescheduling it to Wednesday or Thursday would be better. You said -”

“Enough,” he snapped. “I asked you to switch it to Monday and you failed to do what I asked. I don’t want to hear your lies or excuses.”

“Yes, sir,” I said. “I’ll talk to Farah and ask her to move the meeting to Monday on Aiden’s calendar.”
