There was still sadness in her voice, this morning when I called. “What’s the matter, why do you sound like that?”
“Nothing, I just, I miss you is all.”
“It’s only been a couple days. We were apart for six months. Besides Max was feeling neglected.”
“So why don’t you bring him over? He can stay with me while you’re at work, then he won’t be so lonely.”
“No, I don’t think so.” I didn’t expound on that statement but I knew she’d read between the lines. I’ve had my dog since college and he’s as much a part of my family as anyone else. I don’t take chances with those I love.
He’d already had his heart broken by her once and though I might be willing to take a chance myself, I wasn’t willing to put him through that.
“I’ll call you later if I’m not too busy.”
“When…” She started to question me but caught herself just in time.
“Did you say something?”
“No sorry, just forget it.”
“I’ll talk to you later then if nothing comes up.”
I got off the phone and headed out to my car. If she wants to be with me then she’s going to have to accept that sometimes I can’t be there.
My business takes up a lot of time sometimes, and though I’d made many concessions for her in the past because to me my marriage had been more important, there still had been times I couldn’t be there.
If she’s going to believe that I’m cheating on her whenever we’re apart then this shit will never work. As long as I never give her reason to doubt me, then she shouldn’t.
