There's an expression of shock on Eric's face, and he hesitates. Just that little moment of hesitation is all it takes for my husband to pull out his gun and put a bullet through Eric's head.

The minute Eric's body crumples to the ground, the men around Matteo go for Eric's men. They overtake them with ease, but my husband heads straight for me.

The moment he reaches me, he drops to his knees and starts working to free my hands.

"Are you okay, baby girl?" he asks.

I have to say his voice is remarkably calm, as I sit there in complete shock unable to answer him.

But I don't see or hear the chaos going on around us. Instead, I try to process the fact that he chose me over the revenge that he has been his driving force for months. He chose me with no hesitation. Trust me, there is no other option.

The moment he has my hands free, he picks me up and carries me out of the building.

"Please tell me that you and our baby are okay. We are heading straight back to the doctor to check on both of you," he says.

"I'm okay. We're okay," I whisper. A group of cars come racing into the parking lot and I tense up until I see my father come flying out of one of them.

"Is she all right? Who the hell was behind this?" my dad asks, rushing over to see me with his own eyes that I'm fine.

"She says she's okay, but we're taking her back to the doctor to make sure that she and the baby are fine," Matteo says.

My dad's a smart guy and I can see it in his face that he puts two and two together instantly. Even if Matteo didn't know that I was pregnant when we got married, he'd find out soon enough based on how old the baby is when they do all their measurements.

"Who did this?" my father asks again. His men surround us waiting for orders.

"Eric did this. Before you go rushing in there, he and all his men that were there with him are dead. My men are working on clean up, but I plan in another operation to obliterate his entire family. We can divide up his assets right down the middle," Matteo says. Then gently places me in the car.

"Sounds fair to me. I'm going to go check out the scene in there. Call us as soon as you hear from the doctor," Dad says. Then he leans in to give me a quick kiss on the forehead before walking into the building that we just came out of.

Matteo gets in the car beside me, and his driver takes off immediately. Once we’re on the road, Matteo pulls me onto his lap.

Whatever they gave me to kidnap me has me still groggy and now that the adrenaline has worn off, I can barely keep my eyes open. As much as I'd like to stay awake and reassure my husband that everything is all right, sleep wins over.

Chapter 11

Matteo

Since I have instructed the doctor to meet me at home because it's faster than driving to the doctor's office, I take her there. One of the guys has already picked the doctor up and she will be here shortly.

Aria hasn't spoken, not since the one time she said that she was okay. I've talked to her and let her know she was safe and the doctor was on the way. The entire drive home, she sat on my lap and every so often she would shiver like she was cold.

Thankfully, I had a blanket in the back of the car I was able to wrap her in. I'm pretty sure it's her body going into shock now that she is safe, which cannot be good for the baby.

As soon as we're home, I carry her upstairs to our bedroom and gently place her in our bed. I cover her up and fight the urge to crawl into bed with her and just hold her.

Before the doctor comes into the room, I am able to get her to drink some water. Her doctor does tests on her eyes, arms, and belly making sure that everything seems to be going well.

Finally, she checks the baby's heartbeat, and it fills the room. I don't know much, but I know as long as there's a heartbeat, things are good and relief fills me.

With her checkup complete, she motions for me to join her in the hallway.

"Physically, she seems fine. Nothing is broken. Her wrists have some bruising, which is to be expected, and her shoulder is a bit tender. Also, she's going to feel a little drowsy, and probably have a decent headache. Just make sure she stays hydrated and eats something." She pulls a bottle out of her bag and hands it to me before reaching for a second one.

"The first bottle is some pain medication, which is perfectly safe for the baby. It's basically a strong version of Tylenol. If she's in any pain from the wrist or her shoulder, she can take that. The second one is some anti-nausea medication. Unfortunately, the chloroform effects could cause some nausea and headaches, but she can combat that by eating and drinking some water.

The baby's heartbeat is a little fast, which is to be completely expected with how stressed Mom is.

She needs rest, but I would like to see her again the day after tomorrow just to double-check. If you notice any bruising on her abdomen, or if she throws up and there's blood in it, or if she's in excruciating pain and the medication is not helping, I need to see her right away. Also, I should see her if she starts having any vaginal bleeding or cramps."
