“Just finished talking with Connor.”

“Thank God. Come home, babe. I’m hungry.”

“Ah, so that’s why you’re really calling. You want me to bring you food.”

“And I miss you. But mostly food.”

“The usual?”

“Yes, please.”

I hang up and place a quick call to our favorite Mexican place, Montaña. Funnily enough, ever since she entered her second trimester, Jess has had an intense craving for avocado. Considering her original disdain for them, I tease her about it constantly. She blames our baby.

Our baby.

We’re having a baby.

I still can’t wrap my head around it. Over a year ago, I was answering the door for my crazy neighbor who wanted to climb over my balcony. The neighbor I caught au naturel, who couldn’t keep her hands off me, but later had to because she didn’t date CEOs.

The neighbor that almost drove me insane.

The neighbor who once played the role of my fake fiancée (even if it was just for a few unforgettable weeks), and is now the perfect wife to me.

Turns out, this same neighbor is expecting our first child.

We decided to be surprised when we informed the doctor to withhold the gender information. We’re both dying to know, sure, but there’s something exhilarating about letting the anticipation build and not finding out until the moment arrives—especially given our opposing predictions. I’m still banking on blue, she’s all in for pink.

When I get home, Jess is stretched out across the couch, fast asleep. Her soft breaths fill the dimly lit room, with delicate shadows dancing around her. She can nap anytime and anywhere.

I put the food in the kitchen before going back to her side, welcomed by our feathered friends.

“Squawk.”

“Squawk.”

Slowly and quietly, I move closer to her, to the front of the couch where her head is. Leaning down from behind her, I press a gentle peck on her forehead, our faces in opposite directions—ready for an upside-down kiss, well, almost, anyway. I proceed to lean down and kiss her freckled nose, and that’s when I feel her stir. Leaning down farther, I plant a tender kiss onto her mouth.

Jess smiles, her eyes fluttering open, and her face lights up with recognition. “Hi, my Spider-Man,” she whispers with a loving tone. “I love when you do that.” She gives me a dreamy smile and her eyes sparkle with affection.

“It’s my favorite pastime,” I rumble from behind, looking down at her.

“Did I doze off again?” Her voice is hoarse from sleep.

Smiling, I nod, rubbing her nose with mine. “Yup. Totally passed out.” I reach out and smooth her wild hair away from her face.

“Did you bring food?”

“Absolutely! Spider-Man to the rescue! Clear the streets, citizens! Watch out, villains! First order of business: satisfy a growling tummy.”

She reaches up to my neck and pulls my head down. “You’re my hero in and out of the suit.”

“Oho. My Spidey-senses are tingling.”

The moment she presses her lips to mine, love overtakes me. Our kiss is tender, deep, filled with affection. I can feel her smile against my lips.

When I slowly pull back, it’s confirmed—Jess is indeed smiling, but that smile quickly fades as she reaches out to grab my arm.

Suddenly, she lets out a cry.
