“One outfit is for work, and the other is to wear during my off time while sleeping. We work every single day. Other clones worked night and day shifts to clean and return the same clothing to us every morning and evening. Every four months, we would be issued replacement clothing since ours would start to show signs of wear.” He didn’t want to talk about it anymore. It made him feel guilty. Six of them had gotten away, but hundreds of clones remained enslaved.

“That’s terrible.” Anna used her hands gently to cup his face. Her green eyes peered into his. “You’re not there anymore. We’re here together. Let’s live, Fig. Kiss me. I want you to make love to me.”

“Teach me how to please you. I want to make you happy.”

“I’m going to love you.” With that, Anna kissed him again.

Chapter Four

Anna was terrified that she was living in a dream that she’d wake from. Kissing Fig helped make it feel real. He was a quick learner if he’d been honest about being a virgin with only one kiss in his past.

Every inch of her new skin tingled where they touched. He was warm and firm, and he made her ache in places she’d forgotten existed. She’d never felt so turned on in her entire life. Everything about Fig appealed to her.

A beeping sounded, and Fig tore his mouth from hers. She opened her eyes, panting. He looked at the wall that had become a huge mirror, and his features tensed. His hands on her hips tightened his hold.

“What’s wrong?”

“We’re being hailed. That’s alarming.”

Suddenly Anna was sitting on the bed. Fig had lifted her over his spread legs and placed her on the bed next to him.

He shot to his feet in an instant. “Stay here.” Then he rushed out of the fancy shuttle bedroom.

Anna sat there stunned. The mirrored wall had a small holographic screen lit up in red. It kept flashing the words ‘incoming transmission.’ She wasn’t sure if she should try to follow Fig or do as he’d said.

She got off the bed, found the weird half-shirt she’d discarded, and put it back on. Her gaze kept going to the mirror. The sight of her reflection still shocked the hell out of her. The flashing words stopped being displayed.

She focused on her face as she approached the mirror. “I never looked this good in my life.” Anna swallowed, reached up, and used her fingertips to touch her cheek. “This is real life. My new life.”

Tears filled her eyes, and she just let them slip down her face. All her wrinkles were gone. Her skin was tight instead of loose. Her complexion had a healthy appearance without any blemishes. It was wonderful and also terrifying.

“I’m really a clone,” she whispered, visually studying her new body from her toes to the top of her head in the mirror. She reached up and brushed her fingers through her hair. It had been a darker blonde when she’d been younger, but it remained stark white for some reason. That had started to happen in her fifties. The texture felt silkier than she remembered it ever being.

“It must be a clone upgrade, like looking mid-twenty instead of thirty.”

Anna took a deep breath and slowly blew it out. She closed her eyes and started replaying her memories from childhood to when she’d been shot inside the bar on the space station. They all seemed to be there. It amazed her. She felt like herself on the inside.

She opened her eyes, twisting around, then crouched before straightening back up. Then she bent in half and touched the floor, grinning. Her new body was limber and flexible. She felt good and…strong. All her old aches and pains were gone. She felt like a million credits.

Fig had given her a new lease on life. She stood back up, deciding that she was going to make the most of it. It was a dream come true. She couldn’t travel back in time to her youth to change all her regrets, but now she had a future.

As a clone. Anna needed to learn everything about her new body and how to care for it. I’m doing everything right this time around. No one on Earth interacted with clones since it was illegal for them to live on the planet. It meant she didn’t know squat about them.

The few things she’d read about DJD Clone Corp were mostly about how the two factories that grew clones never woke them until they were shipped off-world. That was to keep in compliance with the law that no clones should be allowed on Earth. People feared they’d secretly integrate with society and turn into serial killers or commit terrorist acts.

Clones were supposed to have some built-in fail-safe so they couldn’t ever turn on humans. Not that most people believed that. Anna suddenly hoped the company hadn’t put in any weird programming that would suddenly awaken inside her. A hundred questions began to fill her head. She really needed to talk to Fig.

Her gaze went to the open doorway. It was tempting to go hunt him down to get answers, but he’d told her to stay put. Anna wasn’t keen on being bossed around after spending over four decades being married to Ralph. Then again, the sexy clone was nothing like her deceased husband had been.

It still blew her mind that Fig had not only been kind to a lonely old lady he’d met inside the bar, but when she’d died, he’d gone to what sounded like a heck of a lot of trouble to give her a second chance at living. He’d danced with her and told her his secret. Fig had trusted her. She decided to do the same.

“You were a miserable fool, Ralph,” she muttered. “I’m not carrying my old bitterness into my new lease on life. I’m going to let you rest in peace. You’ve taken enough years away from me.”

She stripped naked and checked out every inch of herself in the mirror. It was strange but amazing having a brand-new body. It was perfect. Her breasts were firm, so was her ass, and she didn’t have one single scar on it. DJD Clone Corp knows how to make a great product.

That thought had her frowning. I’m still me. Not a product. Everything Fig had shared with her played through her head. He was a person, one of the best she’d ever met. That had to mean that she was still a person, too.

Fig suddenly appeared at the door. The sight of his bared chest had her staring at him. He was muscled and pure sexy. He entered the bedroom and halted.
