“Riggs is gone, too?” I broach, as she shrugs, appearing deliberately nonchalant.

“I suppose he is. I haven’t seen him in a while, and I don’t intend to.” My eyes connect with Sage, Lexie’s sister, and she looks back with sad eyes.

“I wish I knew what crawled up his ass? You’re the best thing that ever happened to him. You know that, Lexie?” I tell her.

She smiles sadly. “He’s got a lot of baggage he has yet to deal with from years ago. It’s my own damn fault for falling in love with a man that’s not available.” That’s the most she has spoken about her feelings for Riggs since I’ve known her. I ask her more about what she means by that statement, but Sage interrupts and we move on from the subject.

“Riggs is an asshole.”

“Amen to that.” Lexie lifts her coffee cup, and we all do the same, clinking our cups against the other and laughing. The tension slips away and we spend the next little while drinking coffee, eating the cinnamon scrolls and chatting.

Unfortunately, it’s then the rest of the clubhouse awakens, with many of the club girls congregating in the kitchen. The one I saw coming on to Chains walks in dressed in her finery as your typical streetwalker, and it’s hard for me not to roll my eyes. But I manage it. Barely. Her eyes take me in and narrow.

“So, you’re the married bitch that’s all over Chains?” She snarls at me, as the rest of the club girls snicker.

I lean my chin on my hand and smile, pretending that her words don’t bother me. “So, you’re the club slut who thinks she can move up to ol’ lady status by coming on to my man?” I shoot back at her. And the four of us high five each other.

“Stay in your lane, bitch. You don’t belong here.” The woman invades my personal space, and although I attempt to control my reaction, I have reached my breaking point after enduring years of being Caleb's punching bag, resulting in an uncharacteristic act as I fist my hand and aim for the club bicycle’s pert little nose.

“Stay the fuck away from me and we won’t have any trouble.” I spit out, shocked that I just did what I did. Blood spurts everywhere, and the other woman screams as I shake out my hand, she launches herself at me, the shock of my hit wearing off.

“Who the fuck do you think you are, bitch? Chains is gonna lose interest in a fat cow like you,” she screams, trying to get at me, but a few prospects who have stayed behind finally make an appearance and pull her off me.

“Kick is going to hear about this. Make no mistake about that, and you’ll be finally out on your bony little ass.” Everleigh turns on the other woman, intimidating her with her five foot seven height, as the prospects drag the club girl out of the kitchen kicking and screaming. Her cohorts following silently behind her.

“She’s a peach.” I mutter. Trying not to show that she had gotten to me, or that my hand was killing me.

“Come sit down, I’ll look at your hand,” Sage tells me, and I do as she says while she patches me up. Just as she was putting away the first aid kit, my phone chimes from the pocket of my dress.

I retrieve it, a smile on my face when I see its Chains.

“Hello?” I say breathily.

“How’s my slugger doing?” he says down the line, amusement and something akin to pride coloring his voice. I can’t help but laugh.

“Wow, news travels fast.”

“Especially when a club bunny gets taken down by an ol’ lady.” He says, I freeze at the words, not daring to hope that he means it.

I know he’s called me that before, but I don’t dare hope it’s true. But before I can even ask him about it, he continues,

“Don’t worry about her anymore, she won’t bother you again,” he replies ominously. I want to tell him not to hurt the woman because of me, but he continues without pausing,

“We’ll talk when I get back, shouldn’t be too long, little one. Stick with the other women. Can’t wait to see you and fuck you, finally.”

A blush creeps up my neck to color my cheeks.

“Me too.” I whisper before he rings off.

For the rest of the day, I walk around with a permanent smile on my face. The only thing that ruins my mood is the fact that I’m unable to get through to my father, and it's worrying me.

CHAPTER TWENTY-SIX

Chains

By the time we arrived in Dallas, thankfully, it was still dark. After getting that text from Kick, and having reluctantly left Zoe in my bed, I’d met Kick, Tiny, Riggs, Ink and Angel outside in the parking lot. Ky stayed back to keep an eye on things at the gym, as well as to watch over the women. With Bear and Knox, the most senior brothers left behind.

Kick had received news from Kon regarding Zoe’s estranged mother, a woman Zoe hardly saw or even spoke of these days. I wasn’t sure what it was, but if we’re riding to Dallas in the dead of night, then I was sure it wasn’t gonna be good.
