There was only a limited amount of water, they said. And the females would spend a whole lot longer in the shower than five minutes if they were allowed.

I didn’t know about the others, but I definitely would. Long showers were one of the greatest treats known to mankind.

It felt good to be able to luxuriate… Even if for only a little while.

I came out of the bathroom drying my hair with a towel, the alien’s shirt clinging to my damp body. He sat at the desk, focused intently on his books, his leg bouncing something fierce.

I guess he was worried about something. Or maybe he was just impatient to see me gone.

In the shower, I’d been thinking my situation over. I didn’t want to pass up what appeared to be a good opportunity for some genuine relaxation — and another long shower in the morning, God willing.

“I was thinking,” I said. “After the day I’ve had, I’d really hate to be Claimed tomorrow morning after the first round of fights. Do you think, maybe, I could stay tonight?”

I felt foolish for asking. Of course he would say no. He didn’t want me here. He wanted to return me to the Prize Pool. He wanted peace and quiet. I’d already put him to so much trouble and—

“Uh, yes, of course,” he said.

I beamed with surprise. “That’s great. Thank you.”

“I have a spare tooth cleaning kit,” the alien said, and he set to rummaging in his desk drawer.

My attention turned to the cot that was roomy for me… not so much for him.

He looked up from his drawer. “Found it!” He came out with a device I’d seen some of the other Prizes use.

I put it in my mouth and there was a series of bright flashing lights. Within five seconds, it was done. I handed it back to him but he waved me off.

“Keep it,” he said.

“Thanks,” I said. “I’ll get a lot fewer strange looks with this than I will with my toothbrush.”

“Tooth… brush?” the alien said.

“It’s a device that… well, it’s not really a device… It’s a tool, a stick with bristles on it that you use to clean your teeth with…”

As I was saying it, it did sound odd. A stick with bristles on it. No wonder the Prizes looked at me funny.

I yawned, and it took up my whole body.

“Come. Sleep.” He lifted the blanket and I slid inside. Then he draped the soft blanket over me and tucked me in.

Tucked me in!

I hadn’t been tucked in since I was a kid!

My beaming grin must have looked ridiculous but I couldn’t help how he made me feel. I shuffled over so he could get in next to me, but instead, he pulled another blanket from the cabinet and placed it on the floor.

He climbed on top of it and rolled the other half over himself.

I couldn’t help but feel a little put out.

Was I really so disgusting to him?

OHARA

The female was too alluring.
