I could feel it.

Regardless of a positive or negative result.

My gaze was set on the floor when he walked back into the living room, but I couldn’t lift my head. It felt too heavy. The moment our eyes connected, I’d know. He stopped right in front of me, but I was still too nervous. He kneeled and tipped my head up to look at him.

And I’d been wrong.

I couldn’t read him.

I had no idea what he was thinking.

“What did I say?” he asked, and I blinked.

“No matter what,” I whispered, and his blue eyes felt like they touched my soul.

“No matter what, everything is going to be okay… little mama.” He winked. I didn’t see anything else because I stuffed my face into his chest as I sobbed with happiness.

“Shh, baby,” he soothed. “I need you to calm down, ladybug.” My glasses fogged up.

“It’s, it’s…” My breath hitched almost painfully. “It’s really positive?”

“Yeah, baby. We’re going to have a baby.” He chuckled, and I kissed him, so happy that I was surprised I didn’t burst with joy.

It was funny how life took twists and turns.

A couple of months ago, I’d shown up at Red’s work determined to cut my best friend out of my life because it hurt too much to have him as only a friend. I would have never expected the way that day turned out and everything after that.

Nine months later, Red and I had a son named Beau. And nineteen months after that, we had another son named Brady.

RED

I laughed at my boys’ antics as they tossed the basketball into the hoops, talking shit as they played.

“Where you going?” Brady asked.

“Inside for some water.” I wiped the sweat from my brow.

“Awe, come on, old man!” Beau teased. “Admit it, you’re just mad we’re kicking your butt.” I laughed and shook my head as I headed into the house.

The AC was on. The cool air was a fucking relief.

Living in the desert had its pros, like sunrises and sunsets, clear air and skies littered with diamond-bright stars. But summers were a bitch. Especially with the heatwave we were having.

I stepped into the kitchen. One look at my wife, and the grin I had on my face broadened. My ladybug was chopping up veggies, even though she knew her boys would complain. But that didn’t stop her from trying to feed them, and me, something green.

We were her world, and she was ours.

Like anything in life, Kait slipped into motherhood easily. She loved being a mom. Watching her with our boys as they grew up to the teenagers they were now felt like an honor.

There wasn’t a moment I took for granted.

I was the head coach at the university and had won three more championships. And despite my busy schedule, I made it a point to be home for dinner every night during the off season. I loved being with my family, and when the boys were little, we had traveled together to each and every away game.

Beau and Brady were my sons through and through. They took after me with the exception that they both got their mom’s eye color. Both were almost my height, and they were only fourteen and almost twelve.

“You get tired of them kicking your ass?” she asked before glancing over her shoulder, a sneaky little smile playing on her perfect lips.
