“I feel like being called someone’s boyfriend at my age…”

“What?" I asked when his voice drifted to nothing.

“I don’t know… is it weird?”

“What do you want me to call you?” I asked softly.

“Yours,” he answered immediately. I giggled, but that didn’t stop him from pulling me closer to him until our foreheads touched. “Yours,” he repeated, scratchier this time, and I kissed him softly.

“You’re mine. That better, then?” I whispered against his lips.

“Hmm,” he grunted. His hands moved to my shoulders before giving them a gentle squeeze.

They roamed down until his hands met mine and our fingers tangled together. I didn’t miss the way his fingers rubbed my ring finger. My heart skipped a beat at what it could mean. At what he might be thinking about.

“That’s a lot fucking better,” he growled, taking my lips with his, and we got lost in a kiss so deep and passionate that it might have started with me on his lap, but I ended up on my back and breathless as we both drifted back to sleep.

And trust me, I wasn’t complaining.

Late-night chats with Red had always been my favorite, but adding sex only bumped them up even higher on my Best Things Ever list.

CHAPTER 10

RED

I’d been rushing out of the locker room, my head filled with all things Kait, when I bumped into Andres Montoya. He’d been a coach at the school before he moved on to work as a scout for a professional team.

“Just the guy I was looking for.” The asshole grinned, and I rolled my eyes. I wasn’t a fan of the guy. Not only had he been a hardass with his players, but from what I had heard, he was a jerk in his personal life as well.

“I don’t have time for this, Montoya,” I muttered. The guy was a real piece of work. Not only had he left on shit terms when he coached here, he’d tried to push one of my linebackers into heading to the draft before he graduated. Coach Goodwin and I both agreed it was always better for our players to have a degree since the sport was so damn dangerous.

“Come on, man, all I need is ten minutes. Twenty max.” I stopped and glanced at my phone.

Kait wouldn’t be out of work for an hour.

I had time to talk to him, hurry home, and be settled and waiting, watching out for when she got home before we video-chatted.

The last two weeks had been harder than I could have imagined. I was already planning on surprising her with an unannounced visit come Friday night. I’d talked to Ryan and told him I needed some time off.

“Twenty max. One minute more, and I swear to god, Andres, I’m heading to my car. I don’t care if you're mid-sentence. We clear?” I sternly pointed at him.

“Crystal.” He shook his head, and I turned around. We walked into the locker room and into my office in the back. I took my seat behind my desk, and he sat down in front of it. I watched as Andres’ dark eyes took in my small office before he turned to look at me.

“We could have gone to coffee,” he muttered. I rolled my eyes.

“That would have only given you five minutes to talk considering it takes fifteen to get there and find parking,” I clarified, and he sighed. “Here.” I stood and grabbed two water bottles from the small fridge I had in my office. I handed one to him and popped the other open for myself as I settled back in my chair, “Better?”

“Why are you so snippy? I don’t remember you being this cranky,” he noted, taking his time to get to why the hell he was bugging me.

“What did you want to talk about?” I asked, ignoring his question. He stared at me for a moment, and his lips twitched before his eyes rose to the ceiling.

“Jesus Christ, not you, too! What the hell is in the water here?”

“Montoya, the clock is?—"

“At first, I thought it was a young guys' game, you know,” he started to say, cutting me off. “Montgomery. Green. Hell, even Castro with my sister.” He shook his head with a look of distaste. “Then Goodwin and now you.”

“I don’t know what you’re talking about.”
