“We’re headed for the tunnel. Tell the men to seal off the perimeter,” I ordered as I pulled the rifle strap over my neck, letting it rest on my back.

“Will do, sir,” Saro stated.

“Did your husband bring an army with him to Texas?” Kitura asked Kennedy.

“He sure did. Franco didn’t want to take any chances.” Kennedy grinned at Kitura as we entered the office.

***P***

“Kennedy, what are we walking into?” I asked as we descended the stairs.

She grew up in this mansion. Who better to ask what we should expect?

My gaze fell over the tawny brown stone walls. They gave the tunnel an ancient feel. Candles flickered in small, curved enclosures in the wall, lighting our path.

“There’s a wine cellar, living quarters in case of a storm, and a panic room. We’ve had dinner parties in one of the spacious cave areas.”

Her eyes studied mine. She probably wondered if I entered a cave would it be too much for me. I squeezed her hand, letting her know I was fine.

“The fragrance throughout is infused musk oil. It was my dad’s favorite incense scent growing up. Dad said the scent awakens your mind. Basically, keeps you on high alert. That’s why he felt it was perfect for the tunnel.”

The woodsy, earthy scent surrounded us. Our boots lightly tapped the tan brick floor as we continued deeper into the tunnel. A copper metal chandelier with red candles came into view. Thearchitecture was beautiful. Too bad we had to destroy it.

I hadn’t noticed one drop of blood on the floor. Anders probably covered the wound with his jacket. Or I struck his bulletproof vest instead of his flesh.

“Kennedy, if he gets inside the panic room, we’ll have to send for someone to break into the box.”

Her brows lifted. “You know someone who can get into a panic room?”

I shrugged. “Yeah, I know a guy.”

“How far does the tunnel go?” I asked.

She visibly swallowed. “Mexico.”

Halting my steps, I met her gaze. “What?” I gritted out.

“Yes. The main safe was installed in the tunnels so my dad, Uncle Anson, Quinn, or me could get out of the country. We have several passports, tons of cash, and foreign currency. Basically, he has access to his to go bag. The ultimate goal is to keep the Carter Empire running from anywhere in the world. Once one of us reached the safe house in Mexico, we could collect our bearings, then move onto our next destination. We have hundreds of safe houses all over the world.”

My wife was one of the most powerful women in the world. I really had no idea who I held captive. Every time she spoke about her family’s criminal underworld, it made my dick hard. Yup, I’d certainly fuck her through the pain later tonight.

“Clip, what’s your location?”

“In the dining room.”

Kennedy tugged at the hem of my bloody shirt, covered in dirt and grass stains. My wife wanted to check my wound in front of her team and mine. I shook my head.

She grimaced. “Franco, you can’t keep going like this.”

“Like what? Clip, Vigo, and Bonnie?” asked in unison.

“I was shot just like Clip and Piero.” My gaze didn’t leave Kennedy’s.

“I didn’t loosen my vest. The bullet penetrated my skin. At the time, my wife was my priority.”

Silence.

Kennedy’s hard exterior was cracking. She wanted to take care of my wound. And she wanted to yell and cuss me the fuck out for not taking care of myself.
