Dad’s hand landed on his stomach, and he burst into laughter. “They are into glam, not running empires. You were into sneakers and guns. Kennedy, you’re a natural.”

“I’m no longer a foot soldier, Dad. I don’t command my men from the streets. That’s not how my husband runs our business in Portland.”

Quinn leaned in. “You’re running the mafia now?”

“Franco runs the mafia. If I want to take part, I can. I’m not forced.”

Dad laughed again. “He wasn’t given a choice either.”

“You’re right,” Franco said. “The Don chooses the next person to lead the family. Usually, by their sixteenth birthday, they’re made aware of their upcoming role. When they turn twenty-five, they take the throne after they’ve graduated college. In my case, it was different. My parents were murdered. I had to take over my father’s position sooner than intended. But I attended college and enjoyed my young adulthood. Kennedy’s twenty-six working on her undergraduate degree because she wasn’t allowed to attend college when she was eighteen. Our children will enjoy their life. And at twenty-five, one of them will take the throne.”

“Children?” Dad stared into my eyes, pointing a finger at Franco. “You’re having children with this guy?”

“We aren’t playing house. We love each other. Soon, we are starting our family.”

Dad’s fist came down on the desk. “You haven’t known him that long.”

“One thing is for certain. He’d never betray me like your precious Reggie did,” I boomed.

Dad’s brows lowered. “What?”

“Reggie made a deal with Snake. They were planning to take over some of the Carter territory by force.”

His brows pinched together. “How do you know that?”

“I overheard him one night. He thought I passed out after I had too much to drink. He probably got me drunk so I wouldn’t overhear his conversation. Fortunately for our family, I had to pee. And I heard him speaking on the phone in code, making a deal. While we were out in the field taking down Snake, I shot him in his heart. He betrayed the Carters’ and he had to go.”

Dad jumped to his feet, pacing. “How do you know he won’t betray you?”

“Franco has done nothing but protect me since I’ve been with him.”

My eyes darkened as they held Dad’s hardened gaze. “Quinn and I aren’t taking over the Carter Empire.”

Bumbie and Jerod walked in on cue. I didn’t give a shit. Standing to my feet, I sauntered toward Dad’s best men.

“Hello, fellas,” I said.

Jerod nodded.

“Kennedy,” Bumbie greeted.

A wicked grin lit my lips as I paced the wooden floor in my stilettos. Each time my heels smacked the wooden floor the sound made me feel all powerful, Which I was. “I’m no longer the woman who wears sneakers in the streets. If I were to work in the streets, I’d wear boots. But as I was saying, I don’t work in the streets. I’ve upgraded. I wear pretty dresses and stilettos. I’m still very much into guns and knives.”

“And it’s sexy as fuck,” Franco growled.

I smirked his way. I’d be sure to sit on his face later and let him tongue fuck me.

Turning my attention back to my father and uncle, I flashed a devilish grin.

“Quinn and I were never here for a family reunion of sorts. Quinn, tell them why we’re here.”

Clad in his navy suit, he sat up straight, looking all powerful.

“Why did you kill our mothers?”

Uncle Anson chuckled. “We didn’t kill our wives. They died in a car crash.”

“No, they didn’t. My woman, Micaela, found out otherwise. She kept it under the radar. During medical school, she hacked the coroner’s office computer system. She learned there weren’t any dental records on file for our mothers. She took it a step further and broke into the coroner’s office. Micaela searched the office files. The dental records she found were for two different people.”
