Guilt and shame plagued her pretty features.

Her words hurt my heart. She did what she had to do to escape her father. Unfortunately, her team lost faith in her. She had me now.

“We’re a team.” My words held confidence.

Kennedy curled her arm around mine. “We are.”

I’d protect my woman with my life.

“Time to strategize,” I said as I opened the door.

“I’m ready,” she confirmed.

I threaded our fingers, then buttoned my navy blazer as we sauntered toward our jet. Our men stood clutching their rifles outside the dark colored SUVs, monitoring our surroundings. Some dressed in suits, others wore jeans, t-shirts, and boots. They all wore bulletproof vests and leather shoulder holsters. I chartered two more jets to accommodate the number of men we’d need for this trip.

Kennedy’s mouth fell open as she peered at the team. “They’re with us?”

“Yes. I asked my cousins for help. They sent their best bodyguards. More will join us in San Antonio later this evening.”

I said I’d stand down and be supportive. I never said I wouldn’t be prepared for war. It was better to have more than enough than not enough.

Kennedy slept for two hours on the jet. The rest was good for her. Considering I didn’t know the next time, we’d get a good night's sleep after this weekend.

We arrived in Houston at ten a.m. After persuading Kennedy to wear a dress that brought out the dark coral and blue colors in my blazer, we exited the jet.

The coral off the shoulder dress with an oversized bow sprawled across her back, hugging her curves.

“The apple slices, pineapples, and mimosas were good.” She squeezed my hand.

I turned my attention from the road as Clip tore down the pavement, leaving the private Houston airstrip behind.

“Sweetheart, I swear you can out eat me.”

She laughed. “Franco, that’s possible. I’m ready for tamales.”

“It’s ten in the morning,” I said.

“Franco, I haven’t been to my home state in years. Let a girl live.”

“All right. We’ll eat tamales. Give the address to Saro since Clip is driving.”

She planted a kiss on my cheek, then stared at her new phone screen rattling off the address.

“I want to hear about the food you love at that restaurant.” My fingers stroked the back of her neck.

Kennedy leaned into my arm, shoving her phone in my face. She started at the top of the menu, explaining in great detail what made the food so delicious. I tried keeping my eyes on the phone, but the vision beside me made it impossible. If her cousin hadn’t skipped town with the money, he owed to me, I wouldn’t have met my future wife. I was truly a lucky man.

Twenty minutes later, I held her hand as we exited the truck.

“I can’t believe I’m wearing a blindfold again,” she growled.

“Franco, this isn’t necessary. I’ve been to the restaurant a million times. They have locations in San Antonio.”

Standing outside the truck, Bonnie pressed her hand over her mouth, gushing with happiness. Ettore grinned, clutching her shoulder. Clip smiled and nodded.
