“The look of fury on his face when he realized I was taking a bath brings a smile to my face every time. That move was worth it.”

Clip chuckled in the rearview mirror. He reminded me of Jake Gyllenhaal with that easy sly smirk.

Was he single like his friend?

“So your friend became a mafia made man and you stuck by his side, huh?”

Clip flashed that easy smirk again. “Yes, I am head of his security team. I protect Franco with my life. And I also protect you with my life.”

My eyes widened. “No. You can’t do that. I’m only here for a little while. Once Quinn returns from the shadows, I can return to my life.”

He nodded. Guess he decided against arguing with me.

“Clip, I’m serious. Give me a Glock. I can protect myself.”

He saluted me in the mirror. “I’m aware Ms. Carter. Daughter of the infamous San Antonio kingpin.”

Tugging at my hand on my lap, I peered out the window. Fuck, he knew who I was.

“Franco doesn’t know who your father is yet. At least I don’t think he does. I haven’t told him what I uncovered. One thing is for certain, Franco wants to kill your father.”

A loud chuckle ripped from my throat. “My father’s like a slithering python. He’s hard to catch.”

“My best friend and boss won’t let that shit go. He will want blood for what he did to you.”

“I’ll tell Franco who my father is tonight. I’ll also inform him I won’t let you protect me.”

He rolled the Rolls Royce to a stop in front of an art déco type of building. “As long as you’re under Franco’s roof, I’ll protect you.”

“I suppose it’s because I’m his captive and he’d like to find Quinn and collect his money. If I wasn’t a lucrative means to an end, he wouldn’t be willing to protect me.”

“Put this on.” Clip knew I was telling the truth.

“We’re attending a masquerade ball and not going out to dinner?” I took the masquerade mask from his hand.

“The fundraising gala was a surprise. Have you ever been to one?”

“All the time,” I stated, positioning the black strap on the back of my head. “My father donated lots of money to charities. And yes, I’ve attended tons of galas over the years.”

The decorative silver mask rested against my nose and forehead, shielding my eyes. The tiny wings at the top reminded me of Pegasus.

“Good, you’ll be in your element.” He winked before placing a black mask over his eyes, then climbed out of the Rolls Royce.

Clip rounded the car and opened my door. He held out his arm. I looped my arm through his. Two men wearing black tuxedos stood on either side of the door. Earpiece wires hung from their ears. The second my stilettos hit the first step, a man wearing a gold mask approached. The black tuxedo gripped every muscle on his chest and arms. I knew that muscled body anywhere.

“Boss, you aren’t supposed to leave the building without cover,” Clip bit out.

Franco smirked, taking my free arm. “Clip, thanks for protecting her.”

Clip shook his head as he released me. I hooked my arm through Franco’s.

“We better get inside before my bodyguard loses his shit. There are men on the buildings surrounding us,” he confirmed as we stepped inside the monstrous room.

Unique art pieces hung on the walls. Decorative masks adorned the guests' faces. Women and men dressed in designer evening attire nursed glasses of champagne while conversing with like-minded people. Light jazz music bellowed through the speakers.

Franco halted. His green eyes roved my body. “Kennedy, you look absolutely breathtaking.”

I curtsied. “Why thank you, my captor.”
