I was free to be me. Live life to the fullest with my husband. Even though I was still the queen pin. It was now on my terms.

Franco scooped me up into his arms and whisked me away. Franco went from being my beastly captor to my beastly, nerdy husband. He’d always protect me.

His queen.

CHAPTER THIRTEEN

FRANCO

Vigo and Remo stayed behind. They made sure the house burned to the ground. Earlier, while most of our immediate team was in the tunnel, I had a crew remove all documents and computers from the house.

Kitura sent a doctor to the jet to examine Kennedy before we flew home to Portland. My wife was familiar with the doctor. She utilized her emergency services while she ran the Carter Empire. The doctor said even though the bullet didn’t enter her body, the wound could get infected if it wasn’t treated properly and monitored. Kennedy would see our doctor in a couple of days.

My wife slept the entire flight. Killing could be a strenuous workout. I shouldn’t have let her go so hard, slicing her family up the way she did. But then again, they had it coming.

Duke called several times, like I was alive. I mean, technically I was. Tomorrow, Quinn and I would put our plan in motion. He and his secret girlfriend flew back on one of the private jets I chartered. We couldn’t fly together since he’d tell Duke he killed me as he requested.

Orazio received my gift. It freaked him out. Come on, it wasn’t every day a delivery guy delivered a box with a severed arm inside to your door. He also called and texted repeatedly the day he received the arm, while my wife and I were at my father-in-law’s house.

One text message I sent said:

Me: We’ll talk soon.

Orazio: We need to meet now.

That was a text I received a few days ago. I wasn’t in a rush to talk to him. I had serious business to handle first before I sat down with Orazio.

The tall leather booth I sat in nuzzled in the back corner gave the perfect view of the front door. Whenever I ate here, I sat at a booth nestled in a corner in the kitchen. No one knew Bella Cucina was one of my favorite Italian restaurants. A man in a powerful position like myself had to be on guard at all times. This was the first time I sat in the dining room. I instructed the owner to open a few hours later. There couldn’t be any patrons around during the meeting. I wouldn’t take a chance endangering innocent people. The sit down with Orazio was long overdue.

The restaurant had that old charm feel. It reminded me of the authentic Italian restaurants in Italy. There were mahogany wooden tables with matching chairs throughout. Crisp white tablecloths adorned every table. The wooden bar that stretched across a good portion of the restaurant had every top shelf liquor. And the wine list was top-notch. Small light fixtures lined the golden walls on either side, giving just enough light to make the space feel intimate yet vibrant. I couldn’t wait to bring my wife to Bella Cucina for dinner. I’d shut the restaurant down again. It would be a romantic evening for two.

Clip and Saro stood nearby, clutching their Glocks in their hands.

Piero patted Orazio down once he was through the front door. Two of his men accompanied him.
