The large blue and white cake was actually cute. Four footballs were placed on the corners of the cake. A football player in a blue and white uniform rested next to the words ‘Happy Birthday Zander.’

I completely forgot it was his birthday. Not that it mattered. Why should I have remembered? Or cared?

A big strong body meshed against my back. Large hands palmed the countertop on either side of me. His distinctive woodsy scent swept up my nose.

“Vicky, what are you waiting for?” His deep voice penetrated my eardrum.

My heart fluttered. Shit, why? It shouldn’t.

I wanted to look up at him, but I couldn’t. At sixteen he towered over my five nine frame. He sniffed my hair. Fuck, I needed to get away from him. But my feet were cemented to the floor.

“Where are the candles? Aren’t your friends going to sing happy birthday?”

He nuzzled my hair. “I don’t know. Hadn’t given it much thought. I’ve been waiting for you,” he whispered.

My core heated to what felt like one hundred degrees. Shit, I’d explode if I didn’t get away from him.

“I’ve traveled all day. I need a shower. Happy birthday, Zander,” I stated, breaking free, darting up the second set of stairs in the kitchen.

Running into my bedroom, I slammed the door. I slid down the door and my ass hit the floor. The way I feel with him is-is-isn’t normal. It’s not right. Every guy I date, I kiss, I fuck, I see Zander. A guy I could never have. Peeling off my clothes on the path to the shower, my stomach twisted in a ball of knots. I wanted his lips to own my body. I’m fucking sick. He’s three years younger than me. Vicky, you can’t have Zander. Not to mention, he’s your younger brother’s best friend.

After my shower I climbed into an oversized T-shirt and shorts and hurried downstairs. En route to the theater room, I peeked out the patio door making sure everyone was ok. Hayden and Zander slid down the tunnel and slammed into the pool. The girls cheered. There had to be about twenty of their friends lounging on chairs, drinking, and playing pool volley ball. I grabbed a bottle of wine out of the refrigerator, strolled into the theater, and locked the door.

Dimming the lights, I relaxed on the sofa and pressed the power button on the remote. Increasing the volume, I sipped from the head of the bottle.

Knock, Knock.

Who the fuck is at the door? It better not be any of those horny little teenagers looking for a place to bone. I paused the movie.

“Who is it?”

No one responded.

I strolled to the door, swinging it open. “What is it…”

My eyes narrowed.

“Shouldn’t you be with your friends?”

He stood in the door frame. Water dripped from his black hair onto his broad shoulders. His long lashes swooshed over his piercing blue eyes. His pink lips ticked up a bit at the corner. Fuck, he was gorgeous. He pushed past me and closed the door.

“Zander, go hang out with your friends.”

He wrapped his arm around my waist. His eyelids hooded. “I wanted to see you,” he whispered against my lips.

His lips tasted like coconut spiced rum. So damn delicious. My fingers sank into his hair. He pulled me flush against him.

“Do you feel how hard I am for you?”

I didn’t respond.

“You’re the only woman who has this effect on me.”

“Zander, you don’t mean that.”

“The fuck I don’t. After I graduate, say you’ll be my woman. No one has to know.”

His lips trailed across my neck sending heat waves to my core. “Zander, we can’t.” In the same breath, I deepened our kiss. I wanted to believe his words, but I knew he was intoxicated. I released our lips, breathlessly, I pressed my hands against his muscled chest.
