“Whatever gets you losers off,” I scowled.

He snickered again. “Check you later sis.”

The second I heard the front door slam shut, I collapsed on the chair, dropping my face on the countertop, crying my eyes out like I was six years old.

I was deeply affected by this man two months later.

“Hey honey what’s wrong?” my father asked pulling me into his arms.

My body quaked against his tall frame. I clutched my dad tight as the tears poured like a tsunami. “I was dating a guy at school. Things went left, so we agreed to go our separate ways. I’m taking it a lot harder than I thought I would.”

He kissed my hair. “I promise it will be ok.” He stepped back, grabbed the box of Kleenex and dried my face.

“Thank you, daddy for listening.”

His blue eyes sparkled. “Any time sugarplum. Your brother flew out of here in a hurry.”

He opened the fridge, retrieving a bottle of chardonnay.

I was allowed to drink at home before I turned twenty-one. But since I turned the big two one in September, my father and I were drinking together now. It was cool.

“Yeah, he and Zander made up.”

He poured the wine into two glasses.

I sipped the wine.

“I have never known those two to argue in all the years they’d been friends.”

Staring into my glass, I gulped the wine.

“Me, your mother, and Zander’s parents were turning down the hall when we saw you dart out. Your mother called out your name. You didn’t stop. Zander and Hayden yelled so loud, Thatcher and I ran into the room to contain the situation.

Zander attempted to pull the wires from his chest with one hand, reaching for Hayden with the other. Zander shouted you can’t keep me from her. I love her. Hayden yelled I forbid it! I forbid it! My heart sank, and I glanced at Thatcher. We realized who they were arguing over.”

My stomach churned as I listened to my father.

“I shoved Hayden out of the room. I asked what they were arguing about. He said drop it, Dad. Hayden slid to the floor, holding his head in his hands. I hate her. I fucking hate her. She ruined my friendship. I sat next to him, pulling him into my arms. I told him, he and Zander would make up. Give it time. I never want to see her again. Then you disappeared. Hayden was worried sick about you. He may have been upset that night, but he loves you. I called Thatcher. I needed to see how Zander was feeling. He said he moped around the house then left.”

I rested my elbow on the counter, placing my face on my palm. There was no way I could make eye contact with my father.

“Thatcher called before the school semester began. He said Zander returned. It was funny because that was when you returned too. How long had you been seeing Zander?”

“Over the summer, we dated until Hayden found out.”

“We always knew he liked you. But you treated him like dirt.”

I shrugged. “It’s over now. I gave Zander up. Told him to promise to make up with Hayden. See we came to a mutual understanding,” I cried.

My father wrapped me in his arms again. “That was a very grown-up thing to do.”

I sighed. “I’ll take another glass of wine please. My heart hurts so bad. Sometimes I can’t breathe.”

“Sounds like you were in love.”

I pulled back, wiping my face. “Dad, more wine please.” He filled my glass.

Still no eye contact. “Thanks, Dad. I’ll be in my room if you need me.”
