“Alright Mrs. Valladares, I see that we are ready to have these babies,” Doctor Garcia says as she breezes into the room.

“Yes. So much yes,” Carmen says laughing.

“Your contraction are a little less than five minutes apart, but you seem to be in good spirits. I am just going to check your dilation progress,” she says snapping on a pair of latex exam gloves. She lifts up the blanket, takes a look, then looks back up at Carmen.

“What? What’s wrong?” Carmen asks panicked.

“You are already almost fully dilated. Twins can do that. This is going to be quick delivery.”

“Oh, thank God,” Carmen replies.

“I'm going to have a nurse wheel you up to delivery and I’ll meet you there. Don’t push until I get there, got it?”

“Yup. I’ll wait.” The doctor exits the room, leaving us alone for the time being.

“We are about to be parents,” I say kissing her forehead.

“We are. Are you ready?”

“Very much so,” I answer honestly.

“Me too.”

“You have made me the happiest of men, Carmen. I know that you were worried about what you dad said to you before you ended him, but I can guarantee you that won’t be us. I loved you from the very first day we met, and I’ll love you until the last breath I take leaves my body.”

“I know, baby. I know. You show me that every single day. Don’t think that I don’t notice that, because I do.”

“Good. I love you. Now let’s get those babies into the world,” I say as the nurse comes in.

“I love you too,” she says as I follow her and the nurse to the fifth floor of the hospital.

In room 513, we welcome the first two of what I hope will be many children. Kathy Ann, a beautiful girl weighing five pounds and six ounces was born first. Hector the III, a strapping baby boy weighing five pounds, eight ounces was born second.

Afterward, Carmen is showered and sitting holding one of the babies. I am holding the other. I look down into my son’s eyes. He is awake for the moment and I while I know that these moments are fleeting, I will always remember who I felt when he looked up at me. So much trust was there. I vow to never let my work interfere with my family. Famila, Honor, y Poder. It has always been my motto, but now it has even more meaning.

Let someone try to come after my family and watch how I burn the world down around them.
