At school, he’s always been tense whenever I’ve seen him in public. Now, we’re surrounded by four dozen people—admittedly, they’re otherwise engaged and not paying us much attention—yet he’s relaxed.

This place? It’s Jason’s,Yuki said.

Ugh. Apparently, she’d been right.

Which makes me think… “Yuki let me know you guys were engaged, by the way.”

He doesn’t seem surprised. Nor does he rush to deny it. “I wouldn’t say engaged. When we were like, five, her father asked mine what he’d think about joining our families. It’s complex here. With our way of life? Most of us are distant cousins. Cain’s Rowan’s brother,” he tells me. Before I can ask any questions, Jason says, “The Moores and the Aldens haven’t crossed that line yet somehow. My dad said sure, so long as one of my sons is amenable.”

I nod, like semi-betrothals are totally normal.

Jason is from another world.

“Yuki’s hot. When we were growing up, Alexander and I fought over her, actually. Then, it was just me. And I didn’t have a reason to not go along with our parent’s desires until recently.” He holds my gaze. “I told my dad I wanted out weeks ago, Nadia. He’s already let the Moores know. Yuki’s pissed because she’s not used to losing anything, but she doesn’t really care. It was business, nothing more.”

I can’t quite bring myself to believe he’d walk away from an agreement he was happy to follow for years. “Weeks ago,” I repeat.

Jason doesn’t reply. Instead, he brings his lips to mine and I lose my grip on reality.

CHAPTER THIRTY-FIVE

His kiss is leisurely at first, like he has all the time in the world. He wraps me in a tender embrace I didn’t know him capable of. But I want more. I need more. I’m the one deepening the kiss, taking.

Jason moans into my mouth and shifts me on top of him on the bar stool. I’m straddling his hardness, heat pulsing and lighting my skin, my core, my soul on fire.

With a deep inhale, Jason forces himself to stop and leans back.

“I don’t want to push you too hard, too fast, Nadia. I threw a bomb at you. Well, several, actually. Do you need time to process all of this?”

Did I? I should, right? That was the sensible thing. The normal thing.

"If you want to make room for this boy in your life, I want you to have an open mind, all the while paying attention to what you want—what you feel."

That’s what my mom told me. Because she knew where getting involved with Jason would lead. My mother, who attends the Heritage parties. With my uncle.

What the fuck?

I’ve shelved that information for a while, and I shove it right back where it belongs, at the back of my mind.

“Jason?”

“Yeah?”

“Shut up and kiss me.”

He doesn’t make me beg. Much.

He does, however, endeavor to drive me completely insane, his mouth sucking along my jawline and neck, as his skilled hands run along my thighs, my stomach—over my dress.

“Please, Jason.”

He laughs against my throat. “What do you want, doll?”

“You.” I need him inside me more than I need my next breath.

Part of me feels like I shouldn’t do this here. The bartender’s right behind Jason, polishing glasses, not paying us any attention. And behind my back, there are tons of people fucking.

Another part of melikesthis.Wantsthis.
