“Aires, the media?—”

“It’s fine.”

“How can you say that?”

“Thomas is working on it.”

“Working on what exactly?”

“Everyone has a price, Bailey. He’s just trying to find out how much theirs are.”

“What are you saying?”

“I’m saying he’s taking care of it for me.”

“You mean he’s buying people off?”

“If that’s what it takes.”

She crossed her arms over her chest. “Or you could just learn to manage your anger.”

I turned her to face me. “You really want to start there?”

“What if I do?”

“You’re not going to like what you hear.”

Eyeing me up and down, she replied, “Don’t look so excited or anything, Aires. Try me.”

“Bay…”

“Tell me.”

“I think I just answered why.”

“Fine.” She shrugged. “Don’t tell me. You can hide from me too.”

“Bailey, don’t be like that.”

“Be like what?”

“Don’t fuck with me. It’s too late for this shit.”

I swear she was the most beautiful girl in the world, especially when she looked at me with big eyes and pouty lips.

As if on cue, my phone rang, and I stepped away to answer it. By the time I hung up, I found her in bed and pulled her against me. We didn’t finish our conversation, or maybe it was our first fight.

All I knew was that it didn’t matter.

I’d do everything in my power to protect her. It didn’t matter how much it cost me.

She was worth it.

Bailey

The following morning, I hollered, “Aires?” when I didn’t find him anywhere as I walked around the house.
