I shake my head. “No. Wade’s in Paris.” I frown, my stomach constricting. I’m not sure why there’s such an uneasy feeling in the air. If it was a serial killer or a monster, they wouldn’t ring the bell.

“I’ll get it.” Karl hops up and strides across the living room to open the front door, but I could never have prepared myself for what he’d say next.

“Wade? What are you doing here?”

“What are you doing here?” I growl, pushing past Karl as rage pumps through my veins. “What’s going on?” I look at Roxy, then at the table, where there’s a half-empty bottle of tequila and two shot glasses.

I feel like I’ve just been kicked in the gut. She went back to him? I know I hurt her, but I hoped we could get past this.

“Wade?” Roxy peeps, her voice small as she gets up. “Nothing is going on.”

“This was a bad idea,” I hiss, spinning back on my heel and marching toward the door. I need to get out of here now, or I’m going to lose it.

Karl doesn’t dare move a toe, and I’m grateful he doesn’t. The last thing I need is to punch somebody else.

“Wade, wait,” Roxy calls out behind me as my feet hit the pavement. I stomp toward my car, but she grabs my sleeve, forcing me to turn around.

“Why are you leaving?” she asks with a slight frown. “Nothing happened between Karl and me.”

I reluctantly meet her eyes, searching for the truth. “Really?”

“Of course, really. I’m not the liar in this relationship,” she spits, tears welling at the corners of her eyes. It crushes my heart to see her like this. Knowing I’m the one who caused it.

“I didn’t lie either,” I say, avoiding her gaze.

She bites back a laugh. “You didn’t exactly tell me the truth!”

I run a hand through my hair. She’s right. That’s why I came here tonight, why I couldn’t wait till tomorrow to confront her face to face. I haven’t been truthful, and I regret it now. I thought maybe, if I came down here and explained, apologised, maybe we could work this out.

“I’m sorry I lied, Roxy. I didn’t know how to break the news to you. I . . . I messed up.” I start pacing. “But nothing is set in stone. It’s only the beginning of negotiations. I’m happy where I am, but I have to think about my career.”

Her eyes drill into mine. I expect defiance, but instead, they’re filled with fear. “I’ve seen the articles, the money they’re offering you to play—”

“I don’t care about the money, Roxy.” My heart aches in my chest. As if that mattered to me.

She brushes me off. “And it’s a big move for your career. All the articles said so.”

“Do you love him?” I blurt, unable to hold my tongue.

“What?” She blinks rapidly, then grimaces. “Who? Karl?”

The anger I was feeling earlier boils back up. “Answer the question.”

“No! Of course not. Not in that way, at least.” At her words my racing heart calms down a bit. “You know that.”

I hesitate before opening my mouth again. But I need to know. “Do you love me?”

“Wade . . .”

My breath catches in my lungs as we stare at each other, the air between us sparking with expectation.

“Please, Roxy.”
