“Football player,” I correct with a pointed look. “And fake rebound.”

“Right. What about your dad, your brother? Do they know?”

“No! And they won’t. They only watch the games. They don’t read trashy magazines, and I see no reason to tell them. It would only complicate everything.”

“Two months, you said? That’s going to be tough.”

I let out a groan. “I know. I’m screwed.” My phone beeps in my pocket, and I check it. It’s Karl. Again. I sigh and put it back.

“Is that him?”

I shake my head. “No. Karl keeps asking when he’ll see me again. I don’t have the courage to reply, ‘Never, because you broke my heart without even knowing it,’ so I ignore him.”

Her eyebrows furrow. “Why? Isn’t the whole point of this fake dating thing to make Karl jealous?”

“Yeah, but I don’t think I can go through with it. I’m sure he doesn’t even care. He has a fiancée. He already won.”

“Roxy, you have the most famous football player in England. You win. Plus, you won’t know if he’s jealous until you actually spend time together. You might still be able to get him back. He’s not married yet.”

She makes a fair point. This thing will all be over in two months. Plus, it’s the most efficient way to figure out whether Karl has any feelings for me. Or if this has always been platonic for him, and all we had was just a drunken night of bad decisions. Might as well go for it. I mean, what could go wrong?

Love Your Body

Why on earth did I agree to go to the gym this early in the morning? Wade probably hypnotised me with those damn eyes.

I shove my work clothes into my gym bag along with some makeup and hair products before getting dressed in turquoise-blue yoga bottoms and a white T-shirt. At six-fifteen on the dot, my doorbell rings. Collecting my hair into a ponytail, I swing the door open.

“Hey,” Wade says, looking way too dashing this early in the morning. “Ready to work out?” He’s wearing an Ivory Sportswear blue-and-gold tracksuit, and he even has the matching cap.

“As ready as I can be at six in the morning,” I mumble, fighting a yawn. “But yeah, let’s go.” I lock the door behind me and follow him to his car, which looks just as outrageous in the daylight. “Back in Ivory’s good graces?” I say as I slide into the comfortable leather seat.

“Oh, yeah,” he says, taking his place behind the wheel. “The contract is back on track. You’re looking at Ivory’s new sportswear ambassador. So thanks for helping with that.”

“Congratulations,” I say. “I’m glad I could be of service.”

He presses a button, and the engine roars to life. “By the way, they’re throwing a launch party for the new product line in three weeks. Would you come with me? After all, it would be a little odd to go without my girlfriend.” He waggles his eyebrows as he buckles his seat belt.

My insides tingle at the thought of Wade getting dressed up in a tux or dinner suit. “Yeah, of course I’ll come with you.”

When we park in front of the gym, half a dozen paparazzi are waiting for us. They really do work from dusk till dawn. All for a picture.

Once inside, Wade warmly greets everyone we walk past. “Hey, Jack,” he says to the bulky guy behind the counter. “I brought a guest today.”

“No worries,” Jack says, letting us through the automated turnstiles.

We both put our stuff away in the locker rooms before meeting up outside.

“So,” he says, propping his hands on his hips. “Today, I’m working on full-body balance. I can show you the exercises, and then you see if you can do them too?”

I tug at the hem of my shirt, clearing my throat. “Yeah, okay. Bear in mind, I’m no athlete.”

The corners of his eyes crinkle with a smile. “Don’t worry about it. Come on, let’s go warm up first.”

He shepherds me to the back of a corridor, where he opens the last room on the left with a key. It’s a large room with dark hardwood floors, floor-to-ceiling mirrors spanning two of the walls, and various pieces of fitness equipment.
