“With the boss that is protecting you with all his heart and has engaged you in, based on what I've heard from you, the healthiest relationship ever? At this point, I'm hoping you are pregnant.”

Feeling uncomfortable and extremely feverish, I switched the topic, and soon I was on the road.

“Maybe I can go back to the city with you later today?” she asked. “I’d like to return to the city for a little bit.”

This made me more excited than she knew.

“Actually, I was thinking of getting you a place here. I mean, I couldn’t afford it before, but now with my new salary I can.”

“That's not the only reason why I didn't live in the city,” she reminded me. “I've never really liked New York. I'm just curious now because things seem to be going really well and- “

“Mom!”

She screamed. “Hannah!”

I had been heading to a meeting downtown when I got the call from Mandy of all people.

“Her brakes had stopped working?” I couldn’t believe it! “It was a brand-new fucking car.”

I picked up my phone then and called my investigator.

“You didn’t have eyes on her this morning, did you?”

“We didn’t, sir. Since things have been quiet and as instructed, we backed away for a little bit and resumed watching her solely through the night.”
