“What?” he asked, and I nodded, well aware of how this looked.

“I know it sounds ludicrous, but?—”

“Yes, it's ridiculous, but it could be possible,” he said, and I was taken aback.

“What?” I asked.

He was amused by my surprise.

He leaned forward then and, as though absent-mindedly, began to play with my fingers.

“Hannah, if you've been a lawyer long enough, you'll come to realize soon enough that almost everything is plausible, so maybe they are right? I do know, however, and for the record, that I'm not behind this sabotage conspiracy if there is one. You know how busy I am."

“I do,” I replied, and then he smiled.

“This date turned out to be much more exciting than I could have ever anticipated,” he said.

I wanted to agree; I truly did; however, I still felt nervous all around.

“You didn't get fired,” he said. “Well, I mean, if you had, they would have probably gotten good grounds for a lawsuit since at the time, at least, you didn't really make a mistake worthy of being fired, and this time at least, it was because you were a woman. A gorgeous one at that, who haunted my dreams.”

I couldn’t help but smile.

“Yeah. I wouldn’t have pursued a suit though, I think. I was monumentally incompetent at the beginning.”

“Yes, you were,” he said.

“So,” he said. “How much is the bet, and do I get half?”

My mouth fell open.

“Why should you get half?”

“Well, because I helped facilitate you earning it.”

I held my chest and reached forward then for my glass of wine.

“I'll pay for this very expensive dinner with my earnings from it,” I said, and he nodded in satisfaction.

“That sounds wonderful.”

Chapter Fifty

Guy

It had been such a long time since I had looked forward in any capacity to returning to this home. However, here I was, expecting Hannah, and couldn’t have been any happier. My parents, on the other hand, were less impressed and just as I had expected.

"Where is she?" my mother came over then, seemingly floating through her sea of high society guests in order to get to me. "She's your secretary, shouldn't she have gotten here before you?"

"I didn't want her to get swallowed up in this crowd you know, so I had her come a bit later. She'll be arriving soon."

"Hmph," she gave me a look and started to walk away, but I grabbed her arm as softly as I could. I stared at her, and she stared back with a knowing smile.

"Don't make this difficult for her or for me. She's already flighty."

"As she should be," she replied. "I mean, I know you made your name for yourself all on your own, but I expected you to be with someone of a higher caliber, an heiress or something, or at the very least, a top-tier lawyer like yourself. Yet in the end, you date one woman in a decade, and who you choose is a secretary?"

My scowl became even darker, and she knew that she was acting dangerously.
