"The previous secretaries," I said. "Do you have any idea why he fired them? And so quickly, I might add."

At my question, her eyes seemed to light up.

"Well," she said. "There were a multitude of reasons, but basically, they just kept making mistakes. That’s unacceptable here, especially for the secretary of a named partner. We could get sued or we could lose hundreds of millions."

"Right," I said. "But do you have the details? The exact documents or tasks they made severe mistakes on?"

"Nope," she replied. "I’m not allowed to know that."

"That’s a first," I couldn’t help muttering under my breath.

After rinsing, I set the cup aside and then, with a smile at her, I exited the break room so I could return to my desk.

Chapter Thirty-Six

Guy

"Did you tell Hannah to head home for the night since our meeting took so long?" I asked as we were driven back to the office.

"Uh," George looked up from his phone. "No, no, I didn’t, sir. I assumed she would have left."

"When she knows she's on thin ice?" I asked.

"Yeah," he sighed. "I'm sorry. I forgot. I thought she would call to ask, but I didn’t get any messages from her. I’ll let her know."

I didn’t want to respond; however, as he pulled up her contact and started to call her, I realized that I couldn’t stand her leaving now. We were a few minutes away, and if I could see her for whatever reason before she clocked out for the evening, then what was the harm?

"No need," I replied. "I have some instructions for her. If she's there, then good."

"Oh," he said, brows furrowing at me changing my mind so rapidly, and then he put the phone away.

As soon as we arrived back at the office, he headed to his, while I went to mine, and despite how exhausted I was, I couldn’t believe how excited I was to see her.

However, I tried very hard to hide it as I headed into the reception. I saw her asleep. She had her head resting on the desk and her eyes softly closed. I stopped right there in my tracks, wanting to move forward but so scared that it would awaken her.

She must be exhausted. She had barely gotten any sleep last night and coupled with the stress from the previous afternoon’s meeting until now, she must be bone tired.

I wanted to head over to her to wake her up and tell her that she could leave. However, I couldn’t bring myself to do it, so as carefully as I could, I headed into my office to grab my things.

I didn’t know if she had woken up, so when I was coming out, I was once again very careful. However, when I turned around, I found that she still had her head on the desk, deeply asleep.

I couldn’t help the smile that came to my face. I watched her for a few minutes, and then I headed over and set down the folder I had in hand, which I was taking home with me, on the desk. She still didn’t wake up. I took the moment to study her. The soft brush of her lashes against her cheek, her soft pouty lips. I knew exactly what she tasted like and what being inside her felt like, and I swore in that moment that I would do anything to have that chance again. But I didn’t know how to do that without further complicating things between us.

Suddenly, right there, she shifted, restless, and then her eyes came open. Noting my presence, she was startled and immediately jumped up, nearly knocking my head off in the process. Thankfully, my reflexes were sharp, so I was able to move out of the way before my chin was bruised.

"Sir!" she called, wide-eyed, and then looked behind me to look at the wall clock.

"I’m so sorry, I wasn’t sure when you’d be back. Do you need me to help with anything?"

She was so groggy and almost out of it that I couldn’t help my amusement. I wanted to hide my smile and simply walk away, but there was absolutely no sense whatsoever in doing that, so I watched her as she tried to get her senses together, and then she watched me.

"You can go home now," I said, and she nodded.

"Next time we go for a meeting this late, just call to find out if it’s needed for you to keep waiting. There’s no point in you being here so late when there’s nothing urgent to handle."

"Yes, sir," she nodded, and then she lowered her head to pack her things.

"Um... a letter came for you," she said as she retrieved it. "It's from the company we had dinner with yesterday, the Japanese men."
