“How is she doing?” John asked.

I was way too preoccupied at first with the contract he had brought me to read, so there was no way I was going to respond to this, much less process it. When I was done, however, and put the document down, I met his smile.

“It’s pretty good,” I said, and he smiled.

“She’s pretty good?”

My brows narrowed as I wondered who he was talking about.

“Your new secretary,” he replied. “She sure brings an ethereal appeal to your office; I’m not going to lie. How about we trade? Sandra for Hannah?”

“They’re chattel now to you? Not human beings?”

“Come on, lighten up.”

“What would you do to her even if we traded?”

“Who knows?” he asked. “We might fall in love, get married?”

“Under duress? That’s kidnapping?”

He laughed out loud at this.

“How the fuck would it be under duress? She would also fall in love with me as well. I’m pretty charming.”

“Not at fifty,” I replied. “Maybe five years ago, but now you’re in your golden years, and gold is never charming.”

“Well, she’s a classy-looking woman,” he said. “Maybe gold is what she likes.”

I stopped talking about this and brought out a pen to sign my signature with.

“I’m serious though,” he said. “If you have no interest in her, maybe I can try my hand? She’s gorgeous.”

“Leave her alone,” I said. “She’s just getting the ropes of her job. Gloria has put me on a dismissal ban for the next three months at least, so please allow me my peace.”

“Haven’t you always been on a dismissal ban?” he asked, amused. “And haven’t you always ignored it anyway and just done whatever the fuck you want, much to her frustration?”

“Right,” I replied and shifted the contract over to him. “Done.”

“Thanks,” he said and rose to his feet.

However, before he left, he stopped and reminded me, “Did you get Cohen’s nomination for Junior partner? George’s name is up.”

“No,” I said, and he laughed.

“It must be a special kind of torture for anyone to work with you.”

“I’m immensely gracious,” I said, “but George is not ready for it nor does he deserve it. He nearly lost us Gary this week by being so rude to him.”

“The alcoholic Gary?” he asked.

“Yes, the billionaire alcoholic Gary whose payments to this firm are enough to cover everyone's salary for at least six months. Yes, that Gary.”

“Fine, but at least speak to the kid nicely when you tell him why you’re not in support.”

“If he doesn’t agree with my refusal, then he can find someone else to work for.”

“You know he’ll never do that. He’s an ace now because of you and only like what? The second lawyer you’ve chosen to work with in the entire firm. He’s loyal and won’t go anywhere but cut the kid some slack.”
