The doctors took the baby away. The woman looked out as the doctors took the baby down the hall. A look of anger, fear, and hatred was prominent in her eyes as she watched the doctors place the baby in a portable crib and wheel the baby down a long hallway.

The vision shifted once again to the living room of a small little home with white walls and light brown wooden floors, pictures decorated the walls and a small toddler played with toy blocks while the woman held onto a small crying infant that was wrapped in a pink blanket.

“She’s sick! I need you to come with me to the doctor’s office!” The woman screamed into the phone.

“What do you mean no?! I wasn’t asking for permission! I’m telling you to get your ass over here now!”

The woman’s eyes widened as the person on the phone spoke.

“You’re just going to have to take my word for it and believe me that she’s-”

The woman went silent for a moment,

“Hello!” she yelled into the phone before throwing it against the wall, waking the small babe in her arms.

There was nothing kind in the woman’s eyes as she laid the small crying babe on a table and walked away, lifting the small toddler into her arms and walking out.

The sound of an engine roaring to life descended upon the house, a few seconds later the woman appeared again, pouring a clear substance all over the room. Making sure to cover every surface. The woman continued to ignore the crying babe as she walked back to the front door, pulled out a single match, and lit it. The woman stared at the small little light for a few seconds before deciding to toss the match inside the home. A roaring fire came to life as it engulfed the small living area, furniture cackled under the heat of the fire, drowning out the sounds of the crying child. The woman did nothing as she turned as walked away back to her car and drove off.

The tall man appeared again, leaping through the window, glass shattering below him as he followed the sounds of the tiny crying babe. The fire had begun to surround the child as the man picked her up and held her tightly to his chest, calling out a name. The man looked around the entire room, fear contouring his eyes as he gazed at the small bundle in his arms.

“Everything is going to be alright I promise.” He whispered as he clutched the child tighter, rushing through the burning home and racing against the clock to get out. He covered the child up more as he went through the window he entered, making sure no glass harmed the child in his arms.

“Is she alright?” A woman’s voice rang out as he made his way across the open field,

“She tried to kill her! That crazy bitch tried to kill my daughter!” The new woman gently took the small babe from the man’s arms just before he dropped to the floor. Taking deep heavy breaths,

“She will continue to harm her, she knows that is all she has to do to get you to come running back to her again.”

“I know!” he growled,

“But I will not leave her alone to deal with that bitch.” The man slowly began to stand up,

“You might have to.”

The rage that filled the man’s eyes was a thing of murderous beauty,

“I am not leaving my daughter alone with no protection against that monstrous woman!”

“I will give her protection.” The new woman whispered as she placed two fingers on the tiny babe’s forehead, a soft orange glow began to travel down the babe’s skin, caressing her. The tiny babe had gone quiet as her little eyes fluttered open. The slight orange hue accompanied the sparkling green eyes.

“You gave her your-”

“Yes.”

The tall man smiled as he embraced the woman, a small tear sliding down his cheek.

“This will make that woman think twice about harming your daughter, no fire will harm her and until she is old enough to wield it, the flames shall keep her safe.”

The man nodded as he gazed back to the burning home and then back to the small child whose eyes held his own before the woman handed him the babe and silently began putting out the flames. Erasing the damage that had been done. The home stood just as it had been before.

The tall man turned his gaze back to the child,

“I don’t want to leave her.” He whispered.

“I know you don’t but it will be safer for her if you do. She won’t be able to be used as a pawn against you.” The woman replied softly as she gently handed the child back to the man.
