“Yes,” he answers with a small chuckle.

“Um, Allie, remember when you said that thing about giving us a minute alone?” I ask.

She shakes her head a little, seeming to snap out of her daze. “Right. Yes. Sorry.”

“Don’t be sorry, he has that effect on people,” I mutter.

“Yeah, I can see that,” she says, before muttering, “All is forgiven.”

She hurries out the door, closing it behind her.

“What did she mean by that?”

“Oh, just … nothing,” I answer, because if ever there was a time to be vague, it is definitely right now. “What brings you by today?”

Please say it’s because you want to marry me. Or because you’re giving us the money. Either thing will make me equally happy. Well, one more than the other.

“I need you to show me around.”

“Show you around the building?”

“Yes.” He takes a couple of steps toward me, glancing at my lips. “Because if I’m going to back your project for the next decade, I need to understand what you do, and how.”

“Don’t forget why,” I say, my voice going all breathy.

He glances up at the ceiling, then back at me. “I feel like I’ve already got a handle on that one.”

“Wait, you said if you’re going to back us.”

“Yes, I did.”

“The emphasis being on the word ‘if,’ as in you haven’t made up your mind?” I ask. “Or did you mean that you are planning to back us, but you were trying to sound sort of casual and sexy about it?”

Chuckling, Ty says, “The second one. Is that how I came off?”

“Is that how you were hoping to come off?”

“Yes.”

“Then, yes. Definitely very sexy,” I say, my temperature going up a full five degrees.

“But maybe not all that clear, since I left you wondering.”

“True,” I answer, stepping closer to him, the bells on my slippers jingling.

“I should work on that.”

Nodding, I say, “It’s hard to be clear and sexy at the same time.”

“I suppose if I have to pick one, I should choose clear. It’s the only way people get what they really want.”

“What do you want?” I ask, my heart pounding.

“I’d rather tell you what I don’t want.”

I glance down at his lips. “So, do that.”

“I don’t want to be a coward who hides behind skepticism. I don’t want to own a stupid football team, and I don’t want to spend the rest of my life letting a sad, little man stop me from putting my trust in the right person.”
