“You complaining, Aiden?” I gave him a look because he was still in my bad book for his part in her last stunt.

They all think I’m stupid, but I’m on to their shit. Mengele has dirt on all of them. Where she gets it from is anyone’s guess, but she uses that shit to get what she wants out of them. Then they come crying to me to get them out of her clutches.

If that’s how my kid wants to do things, I’m not going to stop her; she found her own way, and it works for her. But now that old fuck Wilson has set his sights on me with his shit, and I have to remind him that I’m not Mancini, and I don’t take orders from him or his son.

These assholes dropped the ball, and now his quiet-as-a-mouse daughter-in-law has gone rogue. How the fuck that became my problem, only he knows. Telling him I don’t give a fuck didn’t work because he’s still bitching. I told him to come back and take over this fuck himself, but he claims he's done enough of my work for me as if it was my problem. I didn’t know this shit existed.

“I know one fuck, if anyone touches my kid, even with words, it’ll be the last fucking thing they do.”

“She didn’t giveit to me, and I have no idea where she’s hiding it. What did your wife say to her anyway?”

“How the hell should I know? The kid who dropped it off taught these women how to scramble the videos, so half the time, we think we’re watching them live, and it’s a prerecording.”

“He’s that good?”

“What do you think?”

“I don’t know, Hank; I’ve never wanted them to be involved. Junior is one thing, but my girls are…”

“You better not let these women hear you say that shit, or they’d mutiny.”

“I guess the only thing left to do is get to the bottom of this shit soon. That way, she can go back to being sensible. I almost preferred it when she just thought I was having an affair; this shit is dangerous.”

“I hear you; I understand; I’ve been there. But I can tell you for a certainty that once that horse is out of the stall, there’s no putting him back in.”

“But your wife was a Fed. She’s used to this shit. Britt is different.”

“That’s what you think. You married her because she was smart, and with your abilities, you had to know that she had it in her.”

“To a point, yes, but not like this.” I’ve always known that she was my soulmate; I saw it the moment we first met.

I saw a lot of our future then, even down to the fiery passion that I waited twenty years for, but I never once saw her getting involved in this mess, and neither did I want her to. Mom has been with Dad for more than half a century, and I don’t think she’s ever once interfered with this business or gotten involved in any way.

It's not that I don’t trust my wife’s abilities; it’s the fact that I want to protect her from the darker side of life. I’ve made it my mission in life to keep her safe, to watch over her in every way, her and our children. And none of that involves her getting anywhere near the thing that my ancestors have been fighting for centuries.

I always wanted her to remain like ninety-nine percent of the world, blind to the evil that exists all around us. It doesn’t matter how times have changed or what anyone else thinks. I know as her man, it’s my duty, if not my right as her husband, to stand between her and that shit.

But now, that belief is fighting with my natural instinct to give her everything she wants. “I’ll turn up the heat. Maybe I tried too hard to keep away from Jessica, but each time she got near me, my skin crawled. I don’t have it in me to pretend to want her, and that’s why this shit is taking so long.”

“I hear you, and no one can make you do that shit, that’s why there’s no push.”

“At least Lyon is softer than my old man. He wouldn’t have cared what I had to do to get the job done.”

“Don’t you believe it! He’s not soft, but there are just some lines he refuses to cross or let any of us cross for that matter, and deceiving our wives is one of them.”

“How does he get around it? I mean, keeping your woman out of it without deceiving her?”

“If you ask him, he’d say just tell her to stay her ass where you put her. But the reality is, he knows what she’s doing and doesn’t mind as long as she does it from halfway around the world. As long as they don’t go anywhere physically…”

“Didn’t one of the women fly the plane with the lion cage?”

“Well, I was about to say that that’s the way things used to be, but they’ve changed the game since the lockdown was lifted.”
