I was smarter than this. I shouldn’t let him inside my place. But to be honest, I didn’t want to be alone. Tonight, or in life in general. And that’s what I felt most days. Alone. Without. But tonight I had a chance to change all that, and it was the most enticing offer I'd ever been tempted by in my life.

It was nice to have someone to talk to. Matty was a great conversationalist, too. He was smart, funny, and a good listener. The biker had far more going for him than any one man should.

“Do you want something to drink?” I asked, setting my purse on the kitchen table.

“Whatcha got?” Matty inquired, leaning against the counter as those gorgeous aqua eyes followed my every move.

Checking the fridge, I realized I didn’t have anything but milk and water. And the milk expired last week.

Hopefully, he wasn’t fussy. “I haven’t gone shopping recently. I hope water works for you.”

Bishop grinned. “Water’s good.”

I poured both of us a tall glass from the pitcher in the fridge. Handing his over, I said, “I’m running a little low on supplies. Sorry.”

“Evie, I just got out of a prison where clean water wasn’t always a guarantee. I’m not complaining about anything you choose to give me. I’m just happy you invited me inside.”

The double entendre wasn’t lost on me. I wasn’t sure what I was “choosing” to give the man or if I could even “let him inside” for that matter. I just liked being with him. It was fucked up, bad timing, and poor judgment all rolled into one terrible decision burrito. But, deny it all I wanted, it was how I felt.

Matty took me by the hand. “Come on, Babe. Give me a tour of your place.”

There wasn’t much to show. The apartment had all the basic amenities that the law required and was roughly the size of a matchbox. If we walked ten feet in any direction, he’d have seen the whole apartment in under a minute. At least I’d cleaned this morning. I would have been even more embarrassed of my place if it was small and dirty.

When I came to the bedroom, I waved my hand inside. “That’s my bedroom and the end of the tour. As you can tell, my place isn’t exactly a mansion.”

Matty grinned that sexy grin of his and tugged me inside. “You had me worried there for a second. I was beginning to think you were Amish until I saw that ancient TV.”

I frowned. “It might be old, but it’s a perfectly respectable TV. Besides, I’m so busy, I don’t get a lot of time to watch it.”

He laughed. “Perfectly respectable? I had a better box in the pen, and it was provided by the state! What year is that anyway? Ninety-nine? Be honest. Did they make it before or after the turn of the century?”

I rolled my eyes. “It works. That’s all I care about.”

Matty kicked off his shoes and said, “All right. Prove it,” before settling onto the left side of the mattress.”

I was so distracted by seeing him in my bed, that it took me a second to respond. “Prove what?”

“Prove that it works. I want to see this dinosaur fired up.” He snagged the remote off my nightstand and wiggled it at me. “Unless, of course, you’re admitting to me that it doesn’t.”

I toed off my shoes. “All right, scootch over and I’ll show you.”

“No can do,” Matty argued.

I quirked a brow at him and set my hands on my hips. “And why not?”

“Because,” he argued, “men sleep near the door. That way, if anyone breaks in, we can deal with the attacker and protect our women from harm.”

“You’ve been in prison too long,” I grumbled.

However, his words, despite their archaic nature, made me feel safe and cared for. I did what he said and circled to the other side of the bed.

Climbing onto the mattress, I joked, “Hand me the remote so I can defend my TV’s honor.”

Matty obliged my request and I flicked on the power button. “See! It’s a fine specimen of craftsmanship despite its many years of service.”

“I stand corrected. This fossil has life in it yet,” he teased, pulling me comfortingly into the crook of his arm. “What are we watching?”

Clicking on the Netflix icon, I said, “Reruns of Suits. Don’t judge!” I warned him.
