“It’s all part of the cognitive circle of life. Everyone has to do their bit.”

“In Atlantis it is. Here, I could have more.”

“What about Maris?” He holds his hands up like I’ve forgotten the reason we’re here in the first place.

“She not the naïve girl you think she is. She can handle herself.”

“You’re going to abandon her?” He raises his voice, and my head begins to pound.

“Quieten down.”

“You’re going to leave her out there and leave me?” He frowns, then rubs his head.

“Technically, you’ll be leaving me.”

“That’s not fair.”

“You make out you have these deep feelings for me, but really, what you’re doing is choosing Maris.”

“You’re being crazy right now.” He closes his eyes for a few seconds.

“If we go back to Atlantis, we have no future together.”

“What do you know about the people we’re staying with? What if everything isn’t quite as it seems?”

“If I don’t give them a chance, I won’t know.”

There’s a knock at the door and someone says, “Breakfast is ready.”

“Are you coming down or are you feeling too tender? I could bring you something back,” Ryn says, climbing out of the bed and getting dressed. I can’t help but check out his ass.

“I’ll come down,” I say.

Slowly, I climb from the bed and get dressed. I catch Ryn staring, but I don’t comment. A second ago, I did the same thing.

We go downstairs and join the others at the table. I’ve learnt some of their names, but there are over fifty mer of all ages living here. It’ll take me a while to remember everyone.

“I’ve heard a rumour,” my dad says, taking a drink of his coffee.

“Oh yeah? What’s that?” I help myself to a bagel and some soft cheese.

“The king’s daughter might be on land helping a human.”

I glance at Ryn, who’s plating some food. “Oh. What did you hear?” he asks.

“Apparently, she was on the beach with two human guys yesterday.”

“Two?” I ask.

“Yes. Do you know anything about the princess’s whereabouts?”

Ryn touches my arm in warning. He stares deep into my eyes, and I answer a little more cautiously. “Maris isn’t a threat to this place. She’s a good girl.”

“If the princess is on land unprotected, we could use it to our advantage. The rebellion might have a chance of becoming the revolution.”

I need to buy myself some time to clear my head. I don’t want anything to happen to my friend, and I need to make sure I don’t slip up with my words. “Do you miss living in the sea?”

“Everyone feels the call to the ocean. The longer we stay on land, the stronger it gets.”
