“Hey, that’s not fair.”

“Then stop being so serious and relax. We’re not going anywhere tonight, so chill out. Grab a beer.”

She’s probably right. Even if I dragged her out of here, we wouldn’t get very far. Isaac left us, and I don’t know where to start looking for Maris. If we stick around, maybe someone here can help us. I take a seat on a nearby lounger but don’t accept any drink offers.

The guy who showed me to Pasha returns an hour later. “Have you and your boyfriend managed to catch up?”

“He’s not my boyfriend,” she replies.

“Sorry. He said he was.”

She looks at me and rolls her eyes. Is she mad at me? It doesn’t matter because she probably won’t remember tomorrow, and I can’t have the conversation with her now. “I’m a close friend,” I say. My usual vague answer isn’t really cutting it anymore.

“Will your friend be staying for dinner?” the guy asks Pasha.

“Yes,” Pasha says.

I want to ask her what’s going on. Are we free to leave? Does she want to stay with these merpeople, or is she just drunk?

We walk together to the food hall and sit opposite each other. The guy I think is the leader, Neptune, welcomes everyone to eat, and I dig in.

“Where will I be sleeping tonight?” I ask.

“I think there’s a rug in my room,” Pasha says.

“Ouch. Are you mad at me for letting those guys take you?”

“No. I’m mad at you showing up here and thinking you can play the boyfriend card.”

“I’m sorry.”

“If we were home, you’d never introduce yourself like that.”

“You’re right. I’m sorry.” We can have a more in-depth conversation later, but I owe her at least an apology for the way I’ve behaved.
