“It’s better this way. We don’t want anyone to follow us, especially with what’s at stake.”

“They know where we are.”

“True, but it will take them too long to get back here. We had no choice but to escape. I don’t trust Colin.”

“You don’t trust anyone.”

“I trust Owen and… I trust you.” I’ve never put faith in anyone as I have her. “What is it you saw?” I look around.

She points to an underwhelming collection of stones pushed into the rocks. None of them look like Aquarius. “According to the guidebook, this is the spot,” Maris says.

I take a deep breath. “This was a colossal waste of time. We should’ve stayed in Haiti.” I move away from the river, ready to trek back through the woodland.

“Kasper.”

“What?” I say in a clipped tone. I’m so annoyed we’re going to lose another day travelling. I turn around abruptly and she’s standing too close. We’re nose to nose. “What?” I lower my voice to a husky whisper.

“Are you jealous of Colin?”

“Why would you think that?” I’ve been trying to hide my feelings, but it seems I haven’t done a good job of it.

“You’ve been acting weird since this morning.”

“Fine. Yes. I’m jealous. Are you happy now?”

“Why would that make me happy?” She frowns, and her eyebrows wrinkle together.

“I’m not like one of your rich boys who are after your status.” I probably shouldn’t have said that, but Colin got under my skin.

“What does that even mean?”

“You can’t play with me.” We’ve moved so close I can feel her breath on my face.

“I wasn’t.” The chemistry between us is electric. A bright light appears behind Maris, and at first, I think it’s an actual spark. We both turn towards the ultraviolet light.

“Aquarius.”

“Blue obsidian.”

We move closer to the glass-like structure. A small crack appears in the rock, and together, we prise it open to reveal the next piece of the jug. The inscription underneath it says, Where land meets sea, the stars shine brightest.
