“We thought it would be a fun way to explore Haiti by looking for the dude holding the jug,” Kasper says with ease. He’s slipped into a persona I don’t recognise, but we need to be careful who we share information with.

“I haven’t seen anything like that around here, but in Los Haitises National Park there are lots of star sign pictures carved into the rocks.”

Kasper curses, and I try to cover it up with a question. “Where is the park?” I ask.

“In the Dominican Republic, dear.”

“Is it far?”

Kasper sighs heavily. “It’s a lot farther than the bus ride here.”

“We’re heading back there later today if you want a ride,” Janice says.

“Grandmother,” the guy curses.

“That would be lovely,” Kasper says, turning on the charm.

“Sorry for troubling you, but we could really use the help,” I say to the guy.

He removes his glasses to expose his dark brown eyes. “It’s okay. You can sit with me and tell me all about how you ended up here.”

Kasper scowls. “Mandy gets travel sick, so I’d better sit with her.” He’s not being friendly, but I also don’t miss the lie. He doesn’t want these people to know too much about us.

“Don’t worry, I won’t be sick on the journey. I can take a potion.” I’m not travel sick, but I go along with his story.

“She means a tablet.” He pulls me closer to his side.

“Excellent. I love an adventure,” Janice says.

We take a slower walk back down to the base of the volcano. “We’re going to take the ride, but we need to ditch these two as soon as we have the information we need,” Kasper says.

“They seem friendly enough.”

“Trust is a weakness.”
